Cyber expert says 2014 elections were rigged, poll panel denies allegations

London, Jan 21 (IANS): In a sensational claim, a US-based self-claimed cyber expert Syed Shuja on Monday said the 2014 Lok Sabha elections were "rigged" and even claimed that BJP leader Gopinath Munde was "killed" as he knew about the "hacking" of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), a claim debunked by the Election Commission of India.

Shortly after the claim was made in London, the Election Commission issued a statement saying it firmly stands by the empirical facts about fool-proof stature of ECI EVMs deployed in India.

Making the allegations without proof months before the Lok Sabha polls at an event here organised by Indian Journalists' Association (Europe), Shuja claimed he can demonstrate how machines can be hacked.

"It is not possible to hack a machine using Bluetooth. A graphite-based transmitter is required to get into an EVM. The transmitters were used in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Gopinath Munde was murdered as he knew about the hacking in EVMs," he said in an interaction through tele-conferencing from the US.

The event was attended by senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal.

Shuja, who claims to be part of the team that designed EVMs used in India, alleged that Congress lost 210 seats in 2014 general election "due to tampering."

He further alleged that his team members met "a BJP leader in 2014 who knew about this" and "they were killed in an attack".

The expert claimed "if his people had not intercepted the BJP's attempts to hack the transmissions during this year's assembly polls in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, they would have won those states as well."

He claimed they stopped the transmission during Delhi assembly elections in 2015 and Aam Aadmi Party emerged as winner. "In Delhi Assembly elections, transmission initiated by the BJP IT was intercepted. We changed the frequency."

Shuja claimed he, too, was attacked a few days ago.

He claimed a private company had helped the BJP to get low frequency signals to hack EVMs and added that Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and the AAP had approached him to know if EVMs could be hacked.

Shuja claimed that someone was "pinging" the EVMs to manipulate data. He added that successive chief election commissioners have told him that EVMs cannot communicate wirelessly. "However, our technology allows you to do it using a modulator at low frequency at 7hz. This is a military grade frequency."

In its statement, the Election Commission referred to the event in London and said it has been wary of becoming a party to "this motivated slugfest" but it firmly stands by the "empirical facts about the foolproof nature of ECI EVMS deployed in elections in India."

"It needs to be reiterated that these EVMs are manufactured in Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) under very strict supervisory and security conditions and there are rigrous standard operating procedures (SOPs) meticulously observed at all stages under the supervision of a committee eminent technical experts constituted way back 2010."

The poll panel said it is also examining "what legal actions can and should be taken in the matter."

Opposition parties in India have been expressing apprehensions about misuse of EVMs, but the Election Commission has strongly refuted such allegations.

Look at the time, the name of the individual and the place. Its laughable, where was the demonstration to substantiate the claim?
Congress is now in a desperate situation and trying all these gimmics to create a confusion and be in news. Firstly they cannot fight the BJP on their own. Also the Mahaghatbandan is abandoning them. Cong leader Natwar Singh himself has snubbed RaGA and claimed that Mayawati is the right PM candidate face. Mamata too is an aspirant for the coveted post and supported by another section. Yeshwanth Singh claims today that he has the right experience for the PM post and has worked closely in the past. The CPI leader says he too should be considered if Yeshwant Singh is the fray.

That is why Mr. Modi and BJP supporters always claim that Modi will rule India 2019 and beyond! Something has Tobe done and the best way is to manual counting of ballot papers. Even in USA they are following manual process.
Finally, the secret of EVM's has been exposed. So far it was only a guess now the truth has been exposed. Fraudulent practice everywhere.

Robert Vadra to be summoned by ED. RG and SG evaded lot of taxes. All of these are coming up for hearing. How to avoid negative publicity from this. Rake up another controversy.

Without additional evidence, but knitting a web of story around past events is mere repetition of what is already known. Nothing new came out from this press conference except that Gopinath Munde knew it and was killed for this knowledge. This again does not make sense, because he was in power at the time of his death. BJP lost power in all the subsequent elections. If they knew how to rig, they should have done so in Karnataka, Gujarat, Rajasthan and most importantly in MP. It would be dumb on their part to not use the hacking knowledge.

Yes, timing is right for this revelation except that there is no new evidence given. However, investigation must be conducted on the disappearance or death of the 12 members (mentioned in another new article elsewhere) that this refugee in US is spilling now.

How can a party being in opposition back in 2014 hack the EVM's to win the election? If that was the case, then ruling party would had a upper hand in hacking these EVM's. Kaaleya tasmai namaha... Waiting for the truth to be uncovered. Whereas ballot papers are concerned, I don't support it as so much papers would waste considering environment, we need to safeguard more trees than cutting down them to produce papers. Just my views and opinion.

The fundamental question on this EVM tampering in 2014 elections sounds bogus, because 2014 election commission of India was under Congress rule that time. They want to get rid of the EVMs because the polling booths can't be rigged like the old style of ballot boxes. Any simple person with brains can guess this is a cook up using Pakistan and Indians who have lot of link in England. The name of the individual too sheds more light into the 'cooking up'.

Anybody remember how Munde was killed ? It was a traffic signal, with only his vehicle waiting for the signal to be green. Secondly, its not his vehicle that jumped red signal but the other one. How is this possible on a Delhi road ?

Imagine how many peoples' blood is there on one man, including of the team that Shuja mentioned to have killed in attack ??

As reported in India Today, Shuja's revelations indicate that the hacking was a 'joint venture' between BJP IT Cell and Reliance Communications. Also Gauri Lankesh who was close to exposing the entire operation, who had also made some enquiries with RTI was silenced.

According to Shuja's claim EVMs can be hacked!
I too had doubted how UP results in Lok sabha & later Assembly got such skewed results.
Recently 2 Jio Engineers with laptops had approached strong room with EVM machines after voting, later it was claimed they got there to check their signal strength by mistake!
All these happenings show how selective tampering is carried out or might be the reason we see close fights in Gujarath, Rajasthan, M P & how Telangana too was able to get landslide victory not withstanding nearly 10 Lakh voters got their names deleted on voters list at the last moment.
To allay the fears or to prove EVMs are tamper proof Election Commission need to let IT Engineers of Political Parties to inspect random machines & not sanitized machines provided by them on live streaming video & to take their own time to declare them fool proof.
At the least nearly 50% of VVPATs to be cross verified that too randomly selected by political parties after the counting can only prove the elections are not rigged but fair.
Democratic exercise like voting should be held beyond doubt otherwise no hope for people to express their will once in 5 years & politicians might rule India like Kings & not servants who need to fear to face them, money power we are seeing in poaching of MPs or MLAs these days is culmination of rot in our democracy too as a result.
