CPI(M) hits back at Modi’s comments, says PM speaking like RSS ‘pracharak’

Sabarimala, Jan 16 (PTI): Hitting out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his comments on the Kerala government over the Sabarimala issue, the CPI(M) Wednesday said though he took an oath on the Constitution, but he was speaking like a ‘pracharak’ of the RSS.

The party said Modi’s comments on the issue were “atrocious and condemnable”.

“Mr Modi forgot that he had taken oath on the Constitution of India and he spoke as an RSS pracharak not as the Prime Minister. His statement constitutes a direct assault on the Indian Constitution and the Supreme Court,” the party said in a statement.

It said the state government was implementing the judgment of the Supreme Court, and the Prime Minister’s statement has “dangerous implications for the future”.

“This means that any Supreme Court judgment which does not suit the interests of the BJP and RSS will be defied and the government seeking to implement it will be attacked by them. In the history of independent India this is an unprecedented situation. All those who subscribe to the constitution and secular democratic values will condemn the stand of the PM,” the party said.

On a visit to Kerala Tuesday, Modi tore into the CPI(M)-led LDF government over the Sabarimala issue, saying this will go down as “one of the most shameful behaviour” by any party and government in the country.

Since the shrine opened for the Mandalam-Makaravilakku festivities on November 17, it witnessed massive protests by devotees and right-wing outfits against the state government’s decision to implement the Supreme Court’s order, allowing women of all ages to enter the temple.

Traditionally, girls and women in the menstruating age group of 10-50 years were barred from offering prayers at the shrine, the presiding deity of which is “Naishtika Brahamachari” (perennial celebate).

The hill shrine would be closed on January 20.

Violence involving BJP-RSS and the ruling CPI(M) rocked parts of Kerala during the January 3 shutdown with several houses and shops of rival leaders and workers being attacked over the entry of two women into the temple.

The office of the prime minister of India stood diminished when the man occupying it attacked the Kerala government for making efforts to implement the Supreme Court’s order on Sabarimala.

This retrograde statement must be condemned by all. Holders of constitutional posts are all expected to uphold laws. However, instead of standing up for the spiritual rights of women, the prime minister has spoken in a reactionary manner. His refusal to stand by a wide population of Hindu women has made evident the deception of his defence of the rights of Muslim women on the question of triple talaq.

Was this violence condemned by the Central government? Where did the resolve to establish gender justice disappear? But then it is naive to expect it from those who have come to power by appealing to the most regressive sensibilities in Hindus. It also tells us that the hatred against Muslims and Christians comes in a package: it has to be essentially anti-women and anti-Dalit.

The BJP is hell-bent on putting Kerala on fire and it is the deft handling of the situation by the state chief minister that has contained violence to the minimum– given the support that the hooligans enjoy from the BJP which rules the Centre.

The biggest culprit is the prime minister. Earlier he had tried to cleverly make a “nuanced” difference between the right of tradition in the case of Hindu women in the context of Sabarimala and the rights of Muslim women in the case of triple talaq. But on the ground, he threw away his cloak of decency.

It is high time Hindus realized that if they want to recover their sense of civility, they cannot but get rid of this deception at the first opportunity. It is only three months away.

Actually I feel pity on CPI(M). Kerala is their last bastion in India and now here too, Modi's BJP and RSS are threatening their very existence. They remember the hit they got in Tripura.

Actually Sabarimala issue has exposed both Communists and Congressis in Kerala, making the majoritarian Hindus to steadily back BJP as the prominent Opposition party

Majoritarianism can't supercede Supreme Court. Also how come 'majoritarians backed BJP' bit the dust in MP, Rajasthan, Chattisghar and Telangana in the recent past?

Actually in a first past the post system, seats count & vote share can be different. What BJP used to gain so far was CONgress gain in these states. Also, BJP did not loose badly if you could analyse
