Khain Properties 'Goodali Sadagara' photo crib competitions organized by Kishoo Enterprises, Franchise of Daijiworld Media in Udupi along with Uzward Konkani Fortnightly– Dioceses of Udupi during the Christmas season 2018.

More than hundreds of participants sent their entries in the individual and group category.

Fr Chethan Lobo, Editor of Uzwad, one of the judges of the competitions said that St Francis of Assisi in 1223 prepared the first crib at Greccio, a serene Italian village. Before actually designing the crib, he conceived it in his mind. While he visited Bethlehem in Israel as a pilgrim, he saw the land of Jesus, site of his birth and the village in which he lived. Returning with full to Assisi, he wanted to replicate and relive the birth site of Jesus. Hence, crib was first conceived in his mind and designed in his heart. When actually he realized in in Greccio on the midnight of December 24, he was totally lost into it.

A good number of individuals and groups participated in the Crib Competition organized by Daijiworld Media which was sponsored by Khain Properties, Udupi and Uzward Konkani Fortnightly, Udupi. But the most entries clearly established that it the Crib making was just an activity and not a devotion which evolved from one’s heart. Several cribs were made with artificial things bought from shops. A number of cribs were crowded with illumination lights which disguised the natural setting. In a number of cribs the Centre of the Crib, Baby Jesus was almost not visible. Certain cribs abounded with myriads of sheep which took away the natural atmosphere of the crib. I believe that after having a blueprint of the crib in mind, one must go ahead to execute it. It would have been easier for the crib makers to design best cribs if they had gone through the narration of the birth site of Jesus in the Bible and the nature of the first crib designed by St Francis of Assisi explained so graphically in his biographies.

Nevertheless, the efforts of the crib makers need to be lauded. It isn’t easy to set apart time for crib making from today’s busy schedule. I appreciate the efforts of all both individuals and institutions. May the Babe of Bethlehem bless them. I also appreciate Daijiworld for conceptualizing and executing this great idea of Crib Competition. I hope many more would be inspired in the coming years to prepare cribs and most of all to have cribs designed in their hearts for Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
