Cong 'knowingly' misleading people on Rafale jet pricing: Sitharaman

Mumbai, Dec 17 (PTI): In a scathing attack on the Congress, Defence Minister Niramala Sitharaman on Monday alleged that the opposition party was "knowingly" misleading people over the Rafale jets' pricing.

Lashing out at the Gandhi family for alleging corruption in the defence contract, she said "amazing audacity" was shown by them "in not listening" to the Supreme Court's verdict in the Rafale deal case.

"The Congress is knowingly misleading people on the pricing of the Rafale jets," Sitharaman told reporters at the BJP office in Mumbai.

"The stance of the country's 'first family' in not listening to the apex court's order on the Rafale deal case petition can be termed as, with due respect, amazing audacity," the minister said.

She was speaking as part of the BJP's move to hold pressers in 70 cities across the country on Monday to attack the opposition party against the backdrop of the Supreme Court's verdict on the controversial Rafale jet deal.

Sitharaman said, "We've given the price to the CAG, in a parliamentary system the CAG looks into it and then its report goes to PAC. The PAC will have a look at it and then it'll become a public document. It is a process and it has commenced."

"In the affidavit we've given the data and the information. We think there's an interpretation problem, we would like you (court) to look at it and correct it. That's our appeal to the court, we'll wait for them to take the call," she said. The minister further said they have explained the process through which information comes to Parliament.

"In that the past tense, future tense, present tense and present continuous tense has come into play. That is post the decision, is it not? Therefore, how is it going to affect the verdict?" she said.

The Supreme Court on Friday had said there is no occasion to doubt the decision-making process in the procurement of 36 Rafale jets from France, and dismissed all the petitions seeking an investigation into alleged irregularities in the Rs 58,000 crore deal.

There was no substantial evidence of commercial favouritism to any private entity, the bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi had said on the issue of an offset partner in its ruling on a batch of petitions.

Notwithstanding the court's verdict, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi had said there was massive corruption in the contract and wondered why the Comptroller and Auditor General's (CAG) report "cited by the Supreme Court" on it had not yet been shared with the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament.

Rahul Gandhi had also reiterated the Congress' demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the fighter jet deal and claimed that if it was conducted, names of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and businessman Anil Ambani will come to the fore.

He said the apex court in its verdict cited that a report by the CAG on the Rafale deal was submitted to the PAC but asserted that no such report was given to the House panel headed by Congress' leader in Lok Sabha Mallikarjuna Kharge.

Kharge also said PAC did not receive any such report.

The Congress has repeatedly criticised the deal for the 36 Rafale jets, alleging that the government was procuring each aircraft at a cost of over Rs 1,670 crore as against Rs 526 crore finalised by the UPA government. However, both government and Anil Ambani's Reliance Group have rejected Gandhi's allegations of any wrongdoing.

Arrogant lady is preaching others. When the opposition brought this issue into public, that time this lady was hiding. No guts to utter a single word. Now after getting some verdict by the spineless judiciary by producing false reports these useless big mouth lady is blabbering. If you people are not guilty, then why the whole chor gang is holding 70 press meetings. By doing this, you have proved that, you are corrupt. We Indians are not fools. You people can fool your blind bhakhts, but not all Indians. Don't worry you big mouth lady, you mouth will be shut within few days, once the JPC probe conducted and all the truth will come out.
To come out from the humiliating and shock defeat in state elections, Bhrasta Janara Party (BJP) is trying to divert the attention of the people. But its of no use. Whole India has studied you evil intentions and acts.

    The crime.

    1. HAL indias expert in building plans gets kicked out.
    2. A 12day old company gets the order to build fighters, risking lives of our airforce personnel.
    3. Cost suddenly escalates to over 1000crore for each plane, tax payers to pay in extra of 36,000crore.
    4. Country is yet to get planes that is odered ready to fly immediately even after now 4 years.

Its a crime and not accepting it as a crime is a joke.

SC which is more than happy to jump into 2G, 3G,CWG,Coal allocations done with due process of procedures, assumes some guilt and arranges for FIR all by itself. Finally finds no one guilty.

Same SC now even scared to look into the case, when all rules are violated clearly and with a absolute favoritism shown to ambani.

Country can not prosper with such flip-flopper judiciary.

You need to go through the entire history of the Rafale scam - read through past articles and you will figure out where BJP goofed up.

Sometimes I wonder if the French / Dassault has actually ended up scamming the Modi government and all ministers in the Cabinet are working full time to hide their blunder.

This is what happens when you appoint a lawyer as Finance & Defense Minister.

This woman representing the holier than thou BJP has suddenly sprung to life following the Court's decision. She is parroting her master's voice. That is fine but if indeed the BJP has nothing to hide, why are they shying away from the JPC probe? I am particularly miffed that the order was given to Reliance Defence at the expense of the public sector firm Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. One doesn't need too much commonsense to deduce that when a company that has been formed just a few days prior to all this drama is preferred to a government company which is in business for nearly seven decades, that clearly shows that favouritism played a very big role. How long will Modi take to repay his gratitude to the Ambanis for the role they played in making him the PM? How many more years will he be sycophantic to them? I am not against the BJP. I am convinced that there are many people in this party who are governed by principles but unfortunately this man has brought disrepute to the chair by silencing these people. That does not augur well for democracy.

What you people got from SC decision is just a temporary relief and not a permanent solution on the issue. There are few points which the opposition has pointed out and SC has not given any explanation on such clarification. JPP is surely going throw more light on the real facts and some undisclosed areas of the secret deal. Have patients you can have temporary relief and not permanent solutions/relaxation!

Madam Sitharaman, if Cong is indeed misleading people, they where is the need to shy away from a Joint Parlimentary Probe and why has the CAG been told not to carry out the audit of this deal.

In the past the CAG used to come out with their obsevations almost every second day. How come the CAG is in the silent mode with not even a whisper from them.

The people will not get fooled with your misleading statements.
