14 killed in Afghanistan clash

Kabul, Dec 16 (IANS): At least 14 people, including seven insurgents loyal to the Taliban group and seven government soldiers, have been killed following a fierce clash in Afghanistan's Kandahar province, officials said on Sunday.

Aziz Ahmad Azizi, Kandahar governor's spokesman, said the clash happened on Saturday night, Xinhua news agency reported.

The clash, according to the official, began when a group of armed Taliban attacked security posts in Shurabak district of the province, triggering a heavy gun battle which lasted for hours and resulted in the death of the fighters.

Five militants and three more border policemen were wounded in the conflict, said the spokesman.

Taliban militants fighting the government forces in the region are yet to make any comment on the clash.
