Explosion in Bagalkot sugar factory owned by BJP lawmaker, six killed

Bagalkot , Dec 16 (IANS): At least six people were killed in an explosion in a boiler at a sugar factory in Bagalkot on Sunday.

"Six people have died on the spot due to the blast in the boiler of the sugar factory in Kulali village," a police control room official told from Mudhol, about 550 km northwest of Bengaluru.

At least three others were injured in the blast, the official added.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy directed district officials to shift the injured to hospitals immediately and asked for the site to be inspected to ascertain the cause of the explosion.

"The death of the six people in the blast in the sugar factory is saddening. Bagalkot district officials have been directed to conduct a probe and submit a report. The State government will provide compensation to the deceased's kin," a statement from the Chief Minister's Office said.

The sugar factory is run by the Nirani Group owned by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker from the state, Murugesh Nirani, and his brothers.

Jenifer, I too have similar observation. However, the State government needs to provide compensation to the deceased's kin, and get back the whole amount reimbursed by the factory owner. If we allow the factory owner to pay the compensation, it will take 2 decades. Let the fight be between the State the Owner and not the fight of the family of the deceased/injured against the factory owner.

As far as boilers are concerned, safety regulations exist from British time. There is no escape.

As per rules, boilers need to be certified for safety periodically by boiler inspector and record of certificates with validity has to be maintained. No one can violate this.
If there is a valid certificate, then the boiler inspector has to be arrested for wrong certificate.
If certificate is missing or tampered with, then the factory owner has to be arrested.

Each boiler is provided with Main/ primary safety valve and secondary safety valve. Both cannot fail at a time. Safety valves should have a valid test certificate / calibration certificate with validity / expiry date. If these are not available or tampered with, the persons responsible for these certificates have to be arrested.

Choking or clogging of safety valve is not an excuse. In steam boilers, the valves come in contact with steam alone and nothing else. If any other material goes into the system, then the safety has to be ensured by selecting suitable other safety devices such as pressure sensors, etc. It is not a joke to handle high pressure boilers without safety.
The owner needs to be arrested immediately.

    Jenifer,
Kumaraswamy knows that BJP owner will not give even a pie to the victims.
You think the workers a re insured ...You must be joking....
Next 100% sure the boiler was not certified ...nor any maintenance done ...
As Anilkumar Mangalore mentioned there are relief valves which relases the pressure once ot goes over limit ..That means there was no maintenance .
