Kerala rape case: Nuns, priests frown on bishops’ lament on values

Kochi, Sep 26 (DC): Nuns and priests have sharply reacted to the lament of the Kerala Catholic Bishop’s Council (KCBC), the apex body of the bishops in the state, on the loss of Christian values, saying the issue related to the alleged rape of the nun by a bishop would not have reached such scandalous proportions if only the Church had heeded the missionary nun’s plea for justice. KCBC had on Sunday criticised nuns’ agitation against Bishop Franco Mulakkal, saying they had played into the hands of enemies of the Church and compromised on Christian values.

Bishop Franco Mulakkal

“This lament is shameful,” said Sr Lucy Kalappurakkal, who travelled from the distant Wayanad to Kochi to support the agitation by the nuns. “Nuns were driven to the streets and forced to seek recourse through the law of the land because they had suffered in silence for long, hoping for deliverance within the cloister. And now when nemesis is catching up with the perpetrator, the KCBC says the nuns have violated the values of the church.” Sr Lucy belongs to the Franciscan Clarist Congregation (FCC) in Mananthavady diocese.

She wondered whether the prelates expected the flock to meekly submit themselves to “lecherous superiors”. To the allegation that nuns teamed up with enemies of the church, Sr Lucy said the bishops should have reached the venue of the agitation the very first day, expressing solidarity with those seeking justice. “That would have been such a splendid comrades-in-arms spectacle,” she said. “We would all be blessed for that and the KCBC wouldn’t have raised the caveat of outsiders plotting to destabilise the Church.”

The charge of compromise on the three core values - chastity, poverty and obedience- should not have come from those who failed even to conduct a proper inquiry on the series of complaints submitted by the rape survivor. “They could have settled it within the Church. So who is to blame? Pity, they can’t read the writing on the wall,” the nun said. She recalled that the rape survivor wrote to the apostolic nuncio in January this year after waiting in vain for the Missionaries of Jesus authorities to address her issue. “If protest amounts to violation of Christian values, then Jesus Christ was the first to violate such values,” said Fr Augustine Vattoly.

Contrary to most.of the views here,I would like to state here that:
    1. If there is any criminal offense - our duty is to register a.complaint with the police
    2. Inform the church authorities after that.
    3. By the same yardstick church authorities are culpable if a crime has been reported to them likely involving a priest and they have not informed the police .o am talking not about sacramental confessionals
    4. If the church authorities are found not informed the police - they should be held liable. One can read more about this issue in other parts of the world.
    5. I agree with the lawyers view of giving full legal support to the accused as it is within it's rights to prove his innocence.
    6. I totally disagree with the church authorities on making people exercing thier rights to inform authorities .
    7. I am of the firm belief that educated Catholics feel.alienated from the church because of this attitude of the church. One can see the catastrophic of waning influence of the church in the west.
    8. Speaking against the prepetrator is not going against the church.

I am a practicing Advocate in Goa from last more than 20 years.
I have my limitations in criticizing the Nuns and priests. Ours being the Catholic and universal church where in we Respect our Pope as the direct representative of St. Peter, with a mission of St. Paul, When it comes to nuns and priests cannot blow our trumpets in open without any tone or note, we should strongly take note that the Priests/Bishops and nuns are not the K.G. children, they are matured and I am sure the Nun in question might have lived more than 15 years of her religious life and the bishop in Question might have lived more than 20 years of his priests life .The nuns and priests, I mean Bishops also, have retreat every year besides that many spiritual enlightening Courses too. The nun in question comes out after 4 years, so she requires at least a month’s retreat (may be Ignatian or otherwise) and Bishop in question of course should opt for at least one sabbatical year. Now that he is in Judicial Custody that suffices. So we all Catholics including Nuns and Priests should reflect the whole episode before we cast any type of negative comments. Let us not forget that the devil of selfishness and greed that is greed may be of physical monetary social, has over powered the persons in question. If CHANCE IS GIVEN I AM READY TO ASSIST/FIGHT THE CASE IN FAVOUR OF THE BISHOP TO PROVE HIS INNOCENCE. please let us all not forget that we believe in confession and forgiveness of sins and the words of JESUS WHOSE SO EVER SINS YOU FORGIVE ARE FORGIVEN BY ME.
    Let us all pray.

It is reported that the NUN in question surely had approached several Church bodies. It's only when she met a deaf ear to her complaints, pain and anguish finding no other way out she was forced to go to streets. It is foolish to cry now that Christian values are lost.

Dead or dull consciousness can never judge a thing as it is. It largely feeds on popular bias and negative elements.
We must also take time to appreciate good things happening around us. Most people are jealous of missionary schools running in Metro's which may be making a profit out of it. but they never see the work done by missionaries in rural areas which costs money and qualified staff and tons of patience to educate are rural children.
Sexual abuses are isolated incidents and are personal(Law of the land will deal with it). professionally they are still doing a yeoman service to the society.

Pope himself was shocked after coming to know about series of sexual attack on minor boys in Germany and other European Countries...What happened in Kerala is not a new story..Poor Nuns can't keep silent and Can't say..That is the worst part..Finally despite threat from every corner, some nuns showed massive courage to protest against rapist Bishop.

We the Catholics are taught that Mary and Joseph, parents of Jesus Christ, were pious people therefore were chosen to be the parents of Jesus. Jesus chose disciples to carry on his mission thus The Church was founded. Then on, those who dedicate their life for the Church (priests) too are supposed to live a pious life and be an example to re remaining followers of the faith.

When so many sexual abuses are going on by the clergy, I don't think any piety is apparent. If the vowed priests cannot practice the chaste life of Mary & Joseph, what right do they have to demand it from the flock ? You either forego Ten Commandments from religious teachings, or follow them first, and then anticipate the same from the followers.

The Law of the Land is secondary. The Bishop should have been court martial-led by the Church before any remaining law enforced.

So does the nun. If she says that she was raped 4 years ago, she should have left the convent right away and filed a case. What justice is she waiting for ? An apology from the Pope ? Compensation ? What happened to her vow for chastity ? Please don't confuse the believers.

Please do not generalize it to the entire clergy. Black sheep will be there in every herd. A few wrong doings of a few people in robes, does not undermine the good deeds of many others. Franco has raped and he alone is guilty for the rape.
If you need to complain, you may complain about the KCBC which stood by the rapist all the time until nuns came on the road to protest.
You being a Christian, should be well aware of the age at which nuns take the vow and how confined their lives are, in the convents. The Bishop was in all powers to coerce the nun to fulfill his demands and in that situation the nun had none to turn in to. She might have thought this would pass after every rape. She revolted only when she couldn't bear it any more. It is sad that you people too go on victim bashing!

    Ravi,

That the Bishop has power and can coerce the nuns is not correct. A nun has freedom to leave if she can't adjust to the life in a convent. Thats not all, they are educated, they can find a job, llive a free life and yet serve the Lord. How do single men/women (who decided not to marry), live ? Hmmm ?

Succumbing to physical abuse of a Bishop is equal to being his entertainer. If all nuns protest and leave, whom will he prey on ? Eventually his heroics will be exposed ?

You may heard that Sr. Lucy who participated in the protest was asked to stay away from Church services.

My question is, an un-chaste person is not a God's server. She should have understood it and come out of the den and then filed her case. Four years is not a small time for suffering.

why did she ever found alone to Bishop in 4 years. once she was raped, she should have avoided being present in front of Bishop or if her superior new they could have taken right care that she is never found in front of Bishop any time.

but here she has been found with him for 13 times in 4 years. what kind of waiting and justice she was looking for? if we see, nuns are not alone most of the time they live in convent with at least 4 nuns and Bishop always with other priests. Neither any one allowed to go to Bishop's personal room. same with nun. then how is it possible that Bishop found a lonely place for 13 times over 4 years to rape the same nun?

    Jennifer,
I know I will be stirring a hornets nest by saying this but its best we all read this and contemplate. Back in our childhood the priests and nuns were pious and were in it for the service of our Lord, the poor , the needy and the diseased ones. These days they become priests and nuns because they can lead a comfortable lives. Some even become priests because they realize they are unable to get jobs and will be misfits in the REAL society. I have heard that they choose their Order based not on religious basis but whether that order is based in cities and if they run schools and colleges. Even the nuns join these days for the comfortable life.....if you dont believe me please talk to the Little Sisters of the poor, who run the old age homes across our country. They are facing a serious crunch in recruitment because their life is full of hardships looking after the old people. So you see when the basic idea of joining a 'Company' or a 'firm ' is flawed then down the line this is the quality of priests and nuns we will get. sexual offences is just a tip of the iceberg......you have to dig deep to find the financial wrong doings the church is facing by these so called new recruits,.
We the God fearing flock of the church should pray to our Lord that we get through this but also we should not hesitate even for a moment to criticize when their is some one doing wrong.....be it priest or a nun or even a bishop......if we remain silent when a wrong is done then in my view We can never call ourselves Christians.....because our Lord was a person who stood up all the times when some wrong was done.
    God bless.

The church has survived for two thousand years and more so in modern times owing to the service rendered by nuns to the sick, needy and destitute.

Christ does not exist in the mighty cathedrals and beyond the regalia of the mitre and throne. He exists in sick, needy and the poor. The church has departed from this conviction and that is the precise reason why we have bishop who is accused of rape none less than a Nun. This rape accused bishop is only symptom of the larges decease.

We should thank those nuns who stood their ground firm and brought out this menace to the public. Those frowning about their protest are only exhibiting their fear of being exposed further. They have done great service to the church by showing the muck that lay beneath. They have come to the aid of the Church by saying ' look there is something wrong take note else all citadels of Glory and regalia would just crumble like pack of cards'. Thank you sisters your acts have been just 'Saintly'

I don't wish to comment whether this Bishop has committed the guilt he has been accused of. That is for the courts and the police to decide.
However, what is discernible is the gradual erosion of Christian values and principles. There was a time when Catholic bishops, priests and nuns were known for their honesty and moral rectitude. They were held in high esteem by people from all walks of life. They occupied a very prominent role in the society thanks to their upright and pious thoughts and actions. But that was some time back.

Those values and principles are dissipating and they are being replaced by greed and earthly pleasures. The way these people have started living is undergoing a sea change. Naturally, to keep pace with that kind of living, they need more finance and that is where their needs start. It is a vicious circle and when one need is fulfilled, the next need comes up. Values and principles are then thrown to the wind and these religious people start living the life of a common man. Unless these thoughts are tackled at the ground level, we are bound to see more such instances. The Church needs to give a serious thought to this.

Good, all including me should learn a lesson from this, Now people who has got money and power will get to learn what is shame, Partiality, humbleness & truth.

Money & Power does not go with Spiritually. If anyone who does not agree with this he is Fake.

When you preach, do not just say how Jesus lived on this earth, we all know how He lived and how He died but the message also should reflect how you live on this earth so that we shall follow your way of life & the teachings.

There is always forgiveness for the sin but there is sever punishment for the people who are proud, arrogant and suppress the poor people.

God bless India, specially poor people who seek justice on His Name.

When the most important person keeps quiet and does cover up act, what do his subordinates will do. People should read entire pennsylvania abuse story and its aftermath to know the extent of abuse and how the organisation acted up it

This 'very important' person should be taken care of. What a shame. It is like a saying in Tulu "Beliye pajirn nungunda pajir dada malpun'. A detailed investigation is very important here because if at all this person is guilty he is accountable to the whole Christian community. And the survivor has the guts now to come out, if she had worked out on this earlier would have saved her from many unwanted questions.

When bishops can't clean their own sins they don't have any right to condemn the nuns/common people.Better give respect to your robe & if can't please come out & live as common man.Don't spoil the faith ,respect & value the robe stands for.if you can't internally general public has to do it
