Nun rape case: Bishop Franco Mulakkal sent to 14 days judicial custody

Kottayam, Sep 24 (IANS): Bishop Franco Mulakkal, arrested on charges of raping a nun, was on Monday sent to two weeks judicial custody by a Kerala court.

His bail plea will come up in the Kerala High Court later in the day.

The Pala court near here had on Saturday rejected his bail plea and sent him to two days police custody which ended on Monday.

A medical check-up of the bishop was conducted at the Kottayam Police Club where he was kept since Saturday.

Mulakkal would be lodged at a sub jail in Kottayam district unless the high court gives him bail.

Bishop Mulakkal, who headed the Roman Catholic Diocese in Jalandhar, Punjab, was arrested in Kerala on September 21 after three days of questioning after a nun accused him of repeatedly raping her between 2014 to 2016.

What made this Bishop to travel all the way from the State of Punjab to the State of Kerala to rape this particular nun between 2012-2014 and stop raping thereafter? What both were doing thereafter ? What the nun doing in the guest house during her rape period? Why was she kept alone in the isolated building to be raped from 2012 to 2014? Why that building built and how this Bishop came to know of it? Does Jalandar diocese cover the Kerala State? Many questions without answer.

Strange that a lower court sends the Bishop to 14 days judicial custody when his bail application is expected to be heard by the High Court on 25th. Can this be considered as Judisprudence ? or the system reconciling to the trial by the media.

    @ Mr. Jossey, Mumbai,
You need not wonder about it. Why do you feel offended when the bishop is accused of a crime? This is not the first such incident in the world. Clergymen who are involved in crimes and scandals deserve to be expelled from the church. The filth in the system has to be cleansed in order to preserve the institution’s sanctity.

As for the nun remaining silent until the 12th incident, this is not the first instance when a rape victim has delayed in reporting the crime. Can you imagine the psychological torture, the mental agony and trauma she may have undergone during this period? There are possibilities that she was threatened and intimidated by the mighty, demonic bishop. Obviously she was scared of losing her honour, dignity, reputation and respect that a nun has in society. Still when she mustered courage and complained to her superior general and other church dignitaries, they turn deaf ears to her plight. Finally she was compelled to come out in the public and reported to the police.

This is similar to calling all males rapists - do you agree with it ? Certainly not. Similarly, not all priest are rapists and when they do indulge in physical relationship, they should forego the title priest/Bishop/nun or whatever profession they earned publicly. Nobody objects them in indulging in sexual activity as a common person but being a ordained priest (Bhrahmachari) he shouldn't indulge in what is forbidden for him.

There are sects that allow marriage while being a Christian priest. He can join that. Catholics priest/nuns vow celibacy/spinsterhood. Therefore, it can't be changed for the convenience of one/two erring individuals.

It may be common people celebrities or spiritual people when things on consensus no body knows and there is any problem, when there is disagreement and rape the problem comes to the surface. Of course faith gives strength and peace of mind and guides one in life to do good things and keep away from things which is harmful for one and society. Faith teaches us to love all, to take care of parents and show compassion to all with the warning that wrong doers all will be punished. Human being prone to desires and weaknesses and when thing go wrong we are helpless and moreover all wrong doers are punished here only in one way or the other before thinking of another world.

How do you define Christians as convert-Christians ?

Do you address Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs and Lingayaths with a preceding convert ? Do you remember what your fore-fathers were before you call yourself a Hindu ?

Please maintain your own dignity while addressing others, else, all your Pittale will come out. That is of-course after you come out of your adopted name. When you yourself have no guts to appear as original, do not muster that to criticize others' origin.

As for the case of nun and the Bishop, please note that there are no protest against his arrest as there were about Asaram Bapu. This is the difference between the faith others follow, and you do.

Hide? Who is hiding ? The case is in the open -you can write what u what -no one stopping u -we too are waiting for the truth and could care less what you think.
Unlike rapes and deaths in ashram ofAsaram and his son, or the Kathua rape and murder in temple, or Unnao rape and murder -there is no one from Public interfering,Hiding or protesting.
What is right will be done by the Church and police -nothing much to hide- The Bishop was always available for questioning -So were the Nuns - the truth will be out .
