Kerala nun told to stay away from church duties for protests against bishop

Wayanad, Sep 23 (PTI): A nun belonging to the Syro Malabar Catholic church alleged she was asked to keep away from church duties after she participated in a protest by nuns in Kochi demanding the arrest of rape accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal.

Sister Lucy Kalapura, who returned here Sunday morning from Kochi, claimed she was informed orally by the Mother Superior that she should keep away from holding catechism classes, conducting prayers and other church-related duties.

"No written orders were given to me. I was only informed orally by the Mother Superior not to participate in any church-related activities," the sister told PTI.

The church could not be contacted for comments.

Five nuns had protested near the Kerala High Court at Kochi for 13 days, demanding the arrest of the bishop who was accused of repeatedly raping a nun. There was support for the protest from various quarters and Sister Lucy had also expressed her solidarity.

The clergyman, who temporarily relinquished his administrative responsibilities as Jalandhar Bishop, was arrested Saturday after three days of intense grilling by the Kerala Police.

The nun said no explanation was given to her for the decision and the restraint message from the vicar was conveyed to her through the Mother Superior.

According to media reports, the Mananthavady diocese had recommended disciplinary action against Sister Lucy three months ago for allegedly posting some statements against the church on social media, for purchasing a car through a loan and not wearing the nun's attire at a public function.

However, Sister Lucy denied the charges, saying the restraint order against her was only for participating in the protests at Kochi.

"I feel saddened that I have been asked to stay away from church duties. I had conducted holy mass till last Sunday. I got a lot of support from people of the congregation. I have done no wrong nor said anything against the church. No reason has been given for the decision," she said, adding she would be happy if the church clarified where she had erred.

Indulekha Joseph, one of the leaders of the Kerala Catholic Church Reformation movement, alleged it was an attempt to silence the voices of protest against any form of unjust activities within the church.

Both cheated god by violating vows made by them during ordination. We are all humans and not saints. There is and will be tendency to full fill the desires of flesh. But if someone cannot control his or her sexual desires then they must step down rather than washing dirty clothes in public

For a rape to happen the following are considered.
One is the victim is non consenting for the act.
Secondly the victim had no opportunity to act against the act.

In this case, even if the first instance was rape has happened, with no opportunity to act,
how is it possible the following 12 cases could be termed as rape, if the so called victim
willfully going into his room to commit the act.
Was she bound and brought to his room or is it she was hypnotized in those 12 alleged
    rapes?

Here Sr Lucy must obey her superior as she says. Most probably superior knows more than sr lucy as she says.I dont think lucy is so innocent, otherwise she wouldnt go to protest ,may be she too is a victim?or how could she go to buy a car without superiors permission and in without religious attire. It is a big mystery here which they themselves have to clear.we outsiders cant .That doesnt mean I support previous Bishop.Without lucy s help catechism classes ,prayers ,or church masses, mayy be superior must have done arrangements.so better she should obey her,and pray everything will go in a right way.quite possible it is a warning to her not to give out secrets of insides out.Giving out our internal problems to the world.and world is laughing at us. ashaming.

If the Mother Superior told not to participate in any church-related activities, you better obey as your vow demands. She did not ask you to sin. If she does please disobey. God knows the truth.

This nun, Sister Lucy Kalapura, gains all my respect and appreciation. She listened to her conscience and stood in support of that innocent victim, even though the rapist was a Bishop. Sister Lucy stands far higher than those brigade who light candles and march for photographs.
What worries me is the fact that the educated, liberal and secular readers and regular comment writers here from Mangalore, especially the Christians supporting the Bishop and this action against Sr.Lucy share the same mindset. Shame.

No organisation works on the basis of complete freedom to its members.

Either be a part of the organisation by sacrificing some personal freedom (by following the rules), or do not be part of the organisation.
As a nun (or priest) one must follow the rules - as a voluntary part of an organisation.

This nun has chosen to be both a member of an organisation AND remain completely independent!

One can't have the cake and eat it too.

As I said before, Kerala is the "protesters' own country". So, running an organisation (or business) is nearly out of the question for many.

The only way the Church can reform itself is by accepting that issues like sexual exploitation, corruption, cronyism etc exist in the organisation. All these issues should be made public and the Church should stop trying to hush up and suppress and shame the complainants. It’s high time that honest and God loving people lead this change . Pope Francis is a beacon of hope for all those who have been exploited all these years . God Bless him and help him to take this Organization forward in troubled times .

If one reads the New Testament carefully, it is not difficult to find that there were various issues among the early followers of the faith as well.

Throughout history there have been issues at the organisational level. For example, between 1300 and 1700 AD, almost every pope appointed a near relative to the College of Cardinals (search for "cardinal-nephews"). A certain Alfonso Gesualdo was only 24 when he was made an Archbishop, and 25 when made a Cardinal.

The good old Martin Luther, an Augustinian monk within the Roman Catholic church, tried to suggest some reform, but was unceremoniously expelled - only to herald a major reform in Christianity as a non-Catholic.

However, the Roman Catholic church keeps going.

Don't get hurt Flavian. It is not the Church or the Christianity which is accused for Rape. Only one Bishop is accused of raping a nun and now he has stepped down.
Why are you supporting the Rapist instead of the victim?

This is the right decision, if so. as she says. This is the time she should use alone for herself and look deep within her life in the past. Also she needs to spent time in prayer. This is the same even to the Bishop. A time to know the truth and declare the same.

We do not carry any wrong doing on our death bed. Its better to know the faults and repent. I am sure this will help both to deal with the truth. As the case in the court, the law will take the action.

May the Lord guide them to declare the truth.
