Mangaluru: Illegal sand dens raided - sand, other assets, confiscated

Mangaluru, Sep 22: A team of officials led by the assistant commissioner here, raided a spot where a huge quantity of illegally extracted sand was stored and seized the stock. This incident happened at Adyar Padavu near Valachil in the outskirts of the city in the wee hours of Friday September 21.

The raid was conducted at around 1 am based on reliable information, duly supported by police personnel. About 150 loads of sand, eight engines and five gas cylinders used for sand extraction were confiscated from the spot. The total worth of assets seized has been put at ten lac rupees. All the items were handed over to the deputy director of mines and geology department for further action.

A team led by Beltangady tahsildar conducted raid on a sand extraction unit functioning at Ajakuri near Dharmasthala in River Netravati on Friday September 21. Huge quantity of sand and equipment used for sand extraction was seized.

The gang was using rafts to extract sand from the riverbed and store it in large quantities. Three boats used for transporting sand, a raft and over 15 loads of sand were seized. The items so seized were handed over to Dharmasthala police station and a case was registered there.

The tahsildar was supported by revenue inspector, Ravi and others in the raid.
