State government cuts petrol, diesel prices by Rs 2 per litre

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru/Kalaburagi (MS)

Update

Kalaburagi, Sep 17: Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Monday announced announced that his government is reducing the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 2. The decision comes at a time when the Centre is under attack from all quarters as the fuel prices are on an upward march.

Karnataka has intervened to lower duties on fuel prices after Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal.

"Everyday fuel prices are increasing, people of Karnataka felt that the state government can reduced the prices of fuel by reducing the taxes, I want to announce from Kalburgi that the coalition government has decided to cut down the taxes for petrol and diesel minimum by Rs 2. I hope this step taken by our coalition government will give some relief to the people of Karnataka," H D Kumarasamy said in Kalaburagi.

Earlier this month, 22 opposition parties, led by the Congress, held a nationwide strike or 'Bharat Bandh' to protest the rising fuel prices and falling rupee.

Earlier update

As there are no signs of reduction in the diesel and petrol prices in the country, the state government has taken a step forward to reduce the price by Rs two to Rs two and fifty paise per liter by reducing the state cess on the commodity, thereby giving some sort of relief to the vehicle users in the state of Karnataka.

As per sources, chief minister (CM) H D Kumaraswamy has asked the concerned authorities to prepare a proposal in this regard. Accordingly, it is learnt, that the officials of the finance department have discussed about reducing the price of the fuel and they are going to hold one more round of talks with the CM and are going to release the order for the same.

Kumaraswamy, who had a meeting with the finance department officials, had asked them to investigate whether it is possible to reduce the price by Rs three to four per liter. However, the officials have expressed their concern and informed the CM that reducing the state cess by Rs three to four will have a bad impact on the financial condition of the state and directed the CM to take back the two percent cess that was increased in the budget for loan waiver.

It is learnt that keeping in mind the financial burden the state will have to bear due to the loan waiver scheme and the relief for victims of deluge and rehabilitation of them and also manage the healthiness of the state treasury, the financial department has temporarily agreed to reduce the diesel and petrol prices by Rs two to Rs two and fifty paise and the order to this effect will be released soon.

India’s fuel prices are among the highest in Southeast Asian countries, largely because of excessive taxes imposed by the central and state governments on them (over 40% of the final costs of petrol and diesel).

International oil prices started their descent in July 2014. The Narendra Modi government, which assumed office in the last week of May that year, took advantage of the crash in oil prices to boost its revenue and bridge fiscal deficit instead of passing on the benefits to consumers.

The NDA government hiked excise duty on auto fuels by nine times in 2014-15 and 2015-16. Excise duty on petrol and diesel was Rs 9.48 and Rs 3.56 a litre respectively before the NDA government took office. However, through repeated hikes, it has jacked up duty to Rs 21.48 and Rs 17.33 a litre, an increase of 226% and 486% respectively over the May 2014 level.

When global oil market rallied early this year, putting upward pressure on domestic fuel prices, the government cut excise duty on petrol, diesel by Rs 2 a litre and also abolished the additional excise duty of Rs 6 a litre. But it imposed road cess of Rs 8 a litere on petrol, diesel to make up for the revenue loss resulting from the reduction in excise duty.

Indian consumers of petrol and diesel may be reeling under high prices but oil marketing companies (OMCs) and the government are having a great time.

The three state-owned companies – Indian Oil, BPCL and HPCL – together made inventory gains of over Rs 12,000 crore in the April-June 2018 quarter alone as the price of crude rallied.

What PM Modi's BJP government can't do, Karnataka Chief Minister has done it with small relief.
Where as oil marketing companies (OMCs) which is control by the central government is looting citizens of India.

Petrol is maximally used by high end cars. Inflation will rise as money for schemes for the poor has to come from somewhere. This amounts to robbing the poor and middle class to please the rich. Diesel price for high end cars should also not be reduced. Diesel for transport vehicles only could have been reduced.

Anil Dev... Who though you Maths? How come you arrived at Rs. 28 State Tax. The state tax rate is 32% and as per your beloved writers central govt will give petrol at 58 Rs to the state. If you add state tax for that 58, it will come to 76.56. The state tax added is just 18.56 (even if you add tax on dealers commissions, it will not cross 20). We don't know how these BJP bhakts are getting the figure of Rs. 28.

Before comment and judge do your research properly.

Its just the state tax component he has reducted. The Ktaka state tax was Rs 28 per litre. The CM increased it to Rs 30 to accommodate the 'loan waiver' impact. Now he has again reduced the Rs 2 of the 'state tax' for fuel . Its back to Rs 28. Brownie points for JDS. Bad news for Cong.

    1. Mamatha Banerjee
    2. Chandrababu Naidu
    3. Kumaraswamy
    4. Devegowda
    5. Akhilesh Yadav
    6. Mulayam Singh Yadav
    7. Mayavathi and last but important one is number 8.
    8. Rahul Gandhi.
When considering these names its better to vote Narendra Modi. Mr. Modi is far better than these 8 names. Get someone who is really capable more than Modi for the PM post, Indian citizens will make sure that person will win election... Until these 8 names are there for PM candidature I guess its easier for Modi to win elections without any effort.

You are clearly NOT a blind bhakts, but like you most of India mistakenly believes Mr Modi to be an able leader. But unfortunately I can't find a single successful achievement of his government. On the other hand his grasp of power has grown exponentially in both BJP and the govt. Every central agency is infiltrated with his men, the CBI chief filed a written complaint that his agency was filled with officers who have cases against them including his second in command and hence they can't be officially deputed by law! We have to get rid of him to save the country. P.S. I am not a fan of RG but at least he is not so harmful.
