Udupi, Sep 16: Katpadi Sulatha Kamath, a veteran athlete of international repute, who has bagged several medals in the sports meets meant for veterans in marathon walks and races, was brutally attacked by two young men.
Sulatha, who was seriously injured, was admitted into a hospital here. The accused in the case have been named as Charan Kunder and Deekshith.
Sulatha runs a tea stall in front of her home by the side of national highway 66 at Katpadi near here. She is used to operating this tea still till late in the night. She had closed the tea and retired for the night inside her home. At around 3.30 am on Saturday, someone came near the gate of her compound and sounded it. When the family members woke up, they demanded tea and omelette. When the request was refused, they gatecrashed into the compound.
Accused Charan Kunder picked up a piece of stone from the ground and smashed it against Sulatha's face, badly injuring her in the process. The other accused, Deekshith, attacked her with his hands. When Sulatha's husband, son and daughter, came out because of the sound, abusive words were used against them and death threats were posed. The daughter immediately called the police. The police on night patrol duty immediately came there and arrested the accused. It is learnt that Sulatha's nose bone was fractured.
A case about this incident was registered in Kaup police station.
