Bishop Franco Mulakkal, accused of raping Kerala nun, steps down

Kochi, Sep 15(DC): Accused of raping a Kerala nun multiple times between 2014 and 2016, Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal stepped down on Saturday. The bishop is also expected to leave for Kerala soon.

He said in a letter, "I am likely to be called for further clarifications by investigating officer in Kerala, appoint Rv, Fr Joseph Thekkumkattil & Rev Fr Subin Thekkedathu."

The nun had recently written to the Vatican accusing Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal of raping her.

The case has now been brought to the notice of the Vatican and the representative from India is in Rome to discuss the issue.

The church representative is also expecting an intervention in the coming days, news agency ANI reported quoting sources.

The Kerala High Court on Thursday had expressed satisfaction over the police investigation in the case.

Bishop has stepped down and the nun is allowed to practice/preach religious faith in spite of the fact that she too was involved in the immoral act? Two years period went unnoticed and she was considered as spot less nun to the outside world. She should be ex communicated for keeping silent for two long years. Something fisy !

It was Bishop who raped the nun and not the vice versa, as such he is morally obliged to step down, who is, in fact not even fit to hold the priesthood. Besides, he stepped down only because of public outcry. He should have stepped down as soon as he was alleged to have raped the nun. Our age-old mentallity should stop to victimize the victim.

Before people judge the bishop, it is pertinent to pay heed to the allegations against the "victim nun" by her own congregation:

She helped her cousin get married to a man not approved by the cousin's family.

And shortly afterwards, started having special relations with the same man.

The distraught cousin brought the matter to the notice of the congregation, with evidence.

The congregation investigated and found sufficient evidence that the "victim" had broken certain vows.

The congregation sought the bishop's help to dismiss the nun.

When the bishop passed certain administrative orders against the "victim", the "victim" accused the bishop of rape.

A vow of celibacy in the Catholic church is not a contract. It is a promise.

Quite a few are known to break that promise. That has happened in the past. And will continue to happen in the future.

After breaking the promise (vow), they continue to be a priest/nun as before, as they have broken no contract.

PS: Unfortunately many of the followers mistakenly confuse a personal promise to a binding contract.

Instead of commenting so much on news let us look into our lives first rather than others. All fingers of our hands our not equal so everyone's life. Walk into a shoes of a priest bishop then only we understand their life. They have to answer to God about their work not others then why so much we talk about this. Remember everyone has come from a family don't think priest haven fallen from heaven directly. It was mistake of nun according to me they live in society they are not suppose to go out without superior permission then did she she say lie to be out of CONVENT? I don't think bishop can do such an act which we call it as RAPE. If she was God dear courageous her duty was to report to someone. GOD IS A GOOD JUDGE Not A COURT OF LAW.

Genesis 3:15 gives Christians an indication that life is not going to be easy. But Christ assures us in Mathew 16:18 that gates of hades will not prevail against the church. There will be trials and tribulations but the church will eventually be victorious. Therefore let us not be demoralized instead we must motivate ourselves to continue to do the good works. May I suggest we motivate ourselves by constantly reciting silently in our mind the Bible verse in 2 Timothy 1:7 which is as follows
“ For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power, love, and self-control”

In the meanwhile let us pray to Jesus to bless the authorities to make a fair and just investigation and judgement.

There is a misunderstanding with the definition of Rape...
During the act and after the act, Nun did not feel it as a rape.
If she was forced into sexual act, whole of nuns would not have kept quiet.
After almost 2 years as if she got up from bed and says 'I AM RAPED'
    My views are:

    1. Sex was performed with both parties acceptance OR
    2. It never happened at all.

catholic Priests/Bishops can not engage in consensual sex as they have taken vow of Celibacy. Once they break their vows they are no longer fit to continue as priests or preach as they have broken the commandments.

They are powerful and has religious/moral authority. It may not be easy for the members of the church to say no or to report.

Bishop Franco should have stepped down earlier if there was any truth in the allegations of the Nun. Has he buckled under immense pressure being exerted with the media trial. Allegations of rape that are two or four years old cannot be scientifically proved in a court of law. Alleging rape after two or four years gives an impression of consensual sex for personal gains which did not result in the desired objectives being met by the nun.

News reports specifically point to 5th May 2014 to coroberate the visit to the convent of the Bishop with the alleged rape and confirming with the driver of the visit and entry in the visitors booK. Can any one remember events that happened few months back leave alone two to four years. The convent must have been emptied of all living beings to enable such evil act to occur. Where is the coroboratory evidence for the other 12 cases of alleged rape.

If Bishop Franco has indeed enjoyed sexual favours from the Nun, then he should have accepted moral responsibility and stepped down the moment the nun decided to seek redressal on not receiving her quid pro quo.

As far as the other nuns are concerned who in full public glare have brought disrepute to their christian order need to be thrown out of their congregation for Gross indisipline and Disobedience considering that the High Court was seized of the matter.

Rape is a rape, whether it is reported by the victim or not. It is rape even if it is reported after 4 years or 40 years. Let’s not debate why the nun did not report immediately when it happened. Like many of you guys, I too feel that she should have reported when it happened for the first time so that she would not have been raped repeatedly for 2 years. However, we have to consider the reasons the nun had not to report the incident. As I had said in my earlier comments to one of the previous newsreports on the incident that the nun is an Indian woman and all the rape victims in India don't complain for various reasons. It's only recently rape victims started to complain and that too only a miniscule percentage of women are complaining. She was raped by a bishop and I think she must have also thought nobody would believe her if she complains against him. And she is right, most of the people still don’t believe that she was raped. She must have also thought cleaning their dirty linen at public would make more harm to the Church than to herself. If she has reported now, after 4 years, it could be possible that other nuns might have forced her to report the incident so that the Bishop will not dare to do such act again. The sad thing is that instead of doing internal investigation, the Church is fully behind the Bishop. The police have not taken any action till date. The Kerala Govt. is quiet as it does not want to take sides considering forthcoming election. The best solution to this burning issue is to take lie-detector test on both. Whoever is found to be guilty, he or she should be given exemplary punishment. Even if the Bishop did not rape the nun but had consensual sex, he should be removed from his position as he failed to maintain the priestly celibacy. The Church cannot consider a person for a Bishop’s position, who is there to preach and not to practice what he preached.

Bishop Has resigned .Its A Good Step. Its unlikely theres a Fair Enquiry here as Powerful Lobby is involved here. Its best for Bishop to reconcile with almighty rather than awaiting this human report. If he has done Wrong God will forgive . If hes clean absolutely no forgiveness needed

Forget About This one Bishop . Among us (normal people) there are some Crooks(Not all people are crooks and there are many Good) In Mangalore who were involved in similar acts as above probably much serious offenses . Some of these same crooks you may see in Church Important comitees and front benches with smiling faces. These Cats have finished their jobs by closing their eyes and they are fully content now . Few Of These crooks Have Eaten Money Of others and cheated .Church Must not give any positions to these crooks unless they settle their dues and apologise with women /girls they harmed. Also Put A old rewind Tape recorder on their Head reminding them of their Demon deeds when they were young

Since now Bishop has stepped down, it looks like it could be a case of rape or it was a consensual act of sex between them, it is like you take care of my urges and I will promote you (Nun in question) as Superior of the congregation, when Nun was not made Superior, out for vengeance/revenge she had come out with Rape case, so she is safe. Now Bishop cannot say it was not a rape but consensual sex ?, reason he cannot commit such acts holding post of Bishop ?, so Bishop was in denial though his conscience knew the truth. The question here are :-
    1. If Nun was raped by Bishop, why she had not reported to authorities on first occasion of rape? or left the congregation if she was so upright with God? She should have ?
    2. If Nun was so upright, she should have left the congregation on first account of rape, if she had not, then it looks like it was consensual sex between them ?
Anyway we are not here to judge anybody, both Nun and Bishop conscience know what is the truth and in dignity let them act accordingly so that justice is done.

Pappu and Pinnari Vijayan who all the time shout against BJP and RSS are silent. Because the crime is committed by an Non Hindu in the secular state of Kerala, ruled by the Mahaghatbandhan. Btw Why is nobody bothered about the poor nun who died in the well? it was immediately called as suicide. God forbid something like this happens in an ashram , it would have been all over media for days. And seculars would have asked Modi to comment.

    Sandhya,

What difference will it make if RG or the state CM comments on the topic ? In Muzaffarabad, a father raped his daughter for over six months and was caught red handed by his own wife. The man had drugged his wife with sleeping pills and on one fateful day woke up earlier than normal and caught him in the act. Tell me, is Yogi Adutyanath responsible for this ?

Ghastly, very cruel things have been happening in our country. Its just reported that a 12 year-old is in the maternity ward fighting to give birth that resulted by his neighbour auto driver caused. Who is responsible for this - Government ? Bullxxit !

Case is not yet in the court but people started accusing. Criminal is innocent until proven guilty. So wait for the outcome before you curse and accuse anyone or else you may regret for calling person by names (rapist, criminal, thief etc etc)while he or she is innocent.

We do not know the actual fact, but it has come to notice due to the allegation of the nun involved as she accused the Bishop for raping her multiple times since 2014. But the question arises is why did she keep quiet since 2014, if she was upright god fearing she should have complained immediately without considering the consequences. After all the feeling of sexual urge and attraction to opposite sex is natural to all fit male and female irrespective of what they do. What religion teaches is to overcome that urge and wait for a spiritual goal and many fail in that and becomes victims of their desires.

@SN mangalore,I too was questioning the same.At present I can think only onething may be they were caught by someone by chance during their intimacy and nun had to declare it was rape.I dont blame about privacy,It is left to each what they do and live. But as Religious people ,they shouldnt have done first ,second if at all happened, close the matter with stepping down ,and admit to your sins. Now Bishpo has stepdown doesnt mean he is guilty in my eyes, may be he was asked to comedown by higher officials from Rome?to avoid more skandal.Let them give account to God self, even nun.In my eyes First time can be rape.when for many years it is a consexual act.It is not first time such things happen in catholic churches between priests and either nuns or clerics.Good bishop has at last down.Hope church and court will do the rest in favour of rights.and punish the accused.Nun too have to answer many things

Who are we to judge before impartial inquiry completes by the law enforcing agencies and pass comments here?

Let the truth come out and then we get to know the real picture.

Till then not to take anyone's side and pass judgement.
It is disturbing and church and it's clergy is in question.

It's a positive sign of stepping down from his majesty and await for law enforcement agencies to do their part of duty and conclude.

Both should get justice in this case as one is fighting for on street and the other one is defending for his innocence.

Let the law of the land prevail and the guilty to be punished who ever it is either the Nun or the Bishop.

It's a very shameful incident in society and church in particular is in question.

Today almost all and every religious leaders are in news for wrong reasons in India and around the world.

Faith in judiciary and in democracy is at the Crossroads for the Indian Republic.
Nobody is scared because our Indians values have eroded because all leaders be it Judicial or Religious Order or the last class the Political heads have no morals and shame left.

Latter at end also ask many questions and given chance if wish not continue if wants to become priest or nun. Lastly they are taken to hospital for do necessary things. I do not think my comment will hurt any true Christians. If so, apologies in the beginning.
Kerala Catholic Bishop Conference (KCBC) yesterday came heavily upon the group of nuns protesting in open. In fact the nun's in Kerala are used as bonded laborers. There are many Christian educational and health institutes and most of the staff are nuns. There is no doubt about the sincerity of these nuns in rendering their jobs, be it in teaching or in healthcare. I myself have had many nuns as my teachers in school.
These nuns when appointed as teachers in aided schools(most of them are govt. aided schools), they get a salary and retirement benefits from the government. All these income goes to the church bodies. Upon this they are treated badly by these Bishops and other religious leaders in hierarchy. And when these nuns came in protesting on the roads, instead of supporting them KCBC is reminding of their limits! Absolutely not acceptable.
It is high time that common Christians reduce the powers of these bodies who exploit nuns. I feel severely hurt, as I owe to the nuns who taught me to be who I am now.

This menace of religious heads crossing their moral limits is there in all religions around the world.
Its sad that these are so called religious heads that people trust and obey without any discretion or question, and the absolute power corrupts and they can get down to any depths to achieve pleasures, disregarding the moral & ethical guidelines set by the religious body.

We have 2-3 heads from our own religion in Jail for transgressing their limts - Asaram bapu & others.
Its sad to note even the majority of Christians in kerala supported this bishop without waiting for the investigating bodies report. The same thing happened in our religion too, people are so sheepish that they follow these go mukha vyagrahas and show disregard to the law and don't use their common sense.

I strongly support punishment for this bishop, after the investigations /court find him guilty, so as to deter others.
