Rupee free falls to 72 against US dollar for first time

Daijiworld Media Network

New Delhi, Sep 6(PTI): The Indian rupee on Thursday crashed below the 72-level for the first time ever on persistent global headwinds and concerns on macroeconomic front.

The domestic currency was quoted 37 paise lower at 72.12 against the US dollar in afternoon trade. Investors remained concerned over sustained foreign capital outflows and widening current account deficit in the wake of soaring crude oil prices.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the local currency opened higher at 71.67 a dollar against its previous record closing of 71.75, but failed to sustain initial strength and fell back to breach the 72-mark. The rupee's unabated fall continued for the sixth straight session Wednesday, hitting yet another closing low of 71.75, down 17 paise against the US currency.

On Wednesday, the domestic unit plummeted to a historic low of 71.97 a dollar in intraday trade before finding some respite. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Wednesday attributed the fall in rupee to global factors and stressed that the domestic unit was better off as compared to other currencies.

Forex dealers said besides strong demand for the American currency from importers, concerns of fears of rising fiscal deficit and capital outflows mainly weighed on the domestic currency. Moreover, weakness in emerging currencies overseas against the dollar too weighed on the domestic currency, they added.

Meanwhile, international Brent crude futures fell 27 cents, or 0.4 per cent, to USD 77 per barrel. A fall in crude prices is seen as positive for India, which imports most of its oil requirements, traders said. The BSE Sensex too entered the negative zone by falling 61.11 points, or 0.16 per cent, to 37,957.20 points in afternoon trade.

He's a just copy pasting what BJP petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan said to justify increase in oil prices. These bhakths don't even know that these 'bonds' have a maturity period. For example bonds issued now will be matured in 2022 and whichever government is ruling at that time has to facilitate the redemption of those bonds.
Some dumb bhakths even blame UPA for not paying for Iranian oil, without knowing the fact that any monetary remittance was not possible until 2016 because of sanctions on Iran, but all the oil companies in India had deposited the money for their oil in their Indian bank accounts as and when it was purchased and once the sanctions were lifted interbank transfer was possible.

New Delhi: Government banks handed out Rs 58,561 crore to 615 accounts in agricultural loans in the year 2016. On average, each account has been given over Rs 95 crore in agricultural loans.

This information was revealed by the Reserve Bank of India in response to a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by The Wire.

Agricultural loans incur lower interest rates as compared to other common loans, and they are also given under fewer preconditions than the average loan. These changes were made to make it easier to give loans to small and marginalised farmers. At the moment, farmers are given agricultural loans at the interest rate of 4%.

UPA 1 paid off the out standings of the Vajpayee government, UPA 2 paid up the out standings of the UPA1, Modi government is repaying the out standings of UPA2 and the next government will pay the ou tstandings of the Modi government.

There is a credit line for oil imports and payments are made accordingly and periodically as per their due dates. Do not think that the people of the country are fools to believe in the nonsense that you are trying to spread. BJP is really lucky to have such Opposition,

Opposition has such a wonderful matter to criticize government in front of public . Oppositions first priority should have been to tackle Modi and this is the good chance for them

Opposition should understand PM post and other things are not important factor. Frist thing is to make BJP less than 150 seats in 2019.

If they never act on this chance then they BJ P will somehow manage to get +275 in 2019 with the help of media and all Opposition are permanently finished,

Wake up opposition wake up (Sacrifice PM position this time)

Xiaomi, the Chinese giant, producing (actually assembling) the highest numbers of the mobile phones in India, under BJP invitation to "Make in India" said it may have to increase its phone prices, because of falling rupee against dollar.

It imports all the parts required by paying in dollars, even to Chinese companys. Its a real down grading of Modi policy. If Indian Rupee spirals down like Turkish Lira, God help us and our Jumla-wala.

BJP stalwarts were predicting Modi will bring Rupee in par with US dollars. Alas nothing like that will happen when he demits office soon. Somewhere an abandoned lady must be cursing.

Jaitley says the weakening of Rupee is because of external forces, yes, when you cant hold the Rupee with exports the exchanging will fall. Call back Rajan, jhootley.

One way there is competition with china and other countries our goods moving fast and no more perish or spoil in warehouses. Even for government is receiving much foreign currencies which will be helpful for ex-chequer. It also benefit for NRI's. In domestic front it won't affect much as most of the products are available in nominal rate.
