Kodagu, Aug 16: Heavy rains that lashed across coastal Karnataka caused landslides and have claimed two lives here on Thursday, August 16.

According to reports, two people died on Kodagu-Mangaluru highway in a landslide on Thursday morning. It is learnt that choppers will leave Bengaluru to airlift over 100 people stranded in Kodagu.

As many as 180 people were rescued by the civil defence quick response team from up to 10 feet of water in Kushalnagar and Kodagu in boats on Wednesday, August 15.

The incessant rains have caused severe flooding and all the dams on the Cauvery river other parts of Karnataka are at full capacity. The officials have issued warning to evacuate people residing nearby as water is being released from the dams.

As per the latest weather forecast, the rains will continue to lash across some of the places till Monday.

Meanwhile, chief minister H D Kumaraswamy met officials and discussing the flood situation in coastal and north Karnataka.

Dinesh Gundu Rao, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee chief urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi for help, tweeted, "Heavy rains have caused immense damage in Malnad, Kodagu and coastal areas. While Congress will impress upon @CMofKarnataka to release additional funds for relief, it also expects BJP to bring pressure on @PMOIndia to announce a special package for rain-battered districts."
