Mangaluru: RTO tells rural auto rickshaw drivers not to charge excess fare

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Aug 15: In-charge Regional Transport Officer (RTO), R M Verneker said that the RTO office has received complaints from the passengers about auto rickshaw drivers of rural area charging excess fare, though there is a rule to install a meter in their auto rickshaws. He also assured that strict action will be taken in the near future after verifying the facts.

Verneker was speaking at the 'Janaspandana' programme organized at the RTO office on Tuesday, August 14.

Speaking on the occasion G K Bhat, social activist said, "Auto rickshaw drivers in the rural areas are charging the fare according to their whims and fancies. Though meters are installed and a minimum fare of Rs 25 is fixed in city limits, this rule is not followed by rural auto rickshaw drivers. In the rural areas, the auto rickshaw drivers are charging a minimum of Rs 30 to travel even one kilometre. The rural people are facing this atrocity every day. Strict action should be taken against the rural auto rickshaws."

Responding to the complaint raised by G K Bhat, in-charge RTO Verneker said, "If there are incidents of auto rickshaw drivers charging excess fare from passengers in rural areas, then a complaint may be registered in the respective RTO office quoting the registration number of the auto rickshaw. In the software of the RTO office, the details of such auto rickshaw will be noted and when they approach the RTO in the future for the registration process, suitable action will be taken on them,"

Apart from the above, several issues like compulsory display of board in Kannada in buses, providing bus facility to Kankanady railway station, action against buses who deviate from their original route and providing parking space for express buses coming from Udupi to Mangaluru near Suratkal over-bridge were raised in the interactive meeting.

Some of auto ricksaw take correct fare as per meter and some of auto meter runs like anything else after 1.5 km their meter jumps for every 1 unit they charge Rs. 2 and fare becomes so high where as for same distance if autofare is Rs. 50 to 60 and for same distance some autos charges will be Rs. 80/- this logic is not understand and always surprised in city limit how can be autofare so much. Please give the solution for this I feel whether they are doing anything fraud with meter to charge more.

It's all an eye wash while huge amount of money in the form of bribe is carried out under the nose of RTO, what is he doing about it.

No action only statement. City bus dont travel till last stop, some travel till milagrese, pumpwell. City bus drivers do rash driving risking 2 wheelers. Auto drivers charge one and half after 8pm and also in day time for some specific destnation. Auto drivers refuse to take you to the destinations many time even though they are in auto stand. But even after so many complaints still RTO have not taken even 0.01% action. RTO is known only for corruption and not for public service.

This is hide and seek game by RTO. Many of these Bus owners are close friends of the POLICE. What is preventing the RTO from mandating all Rickshaw to install meter? They can authorize to certain percentage extra but no Rickshaws without meter should be allowed to run not even in remote villages.
