Mangaluru, Aug 15: Nagara Panchami, the feast of serpent god was celebrated with religious fervour in city with hundreds of devotees thronging Kudupu temple despite heavy rains here on Wednesday August 15.

People gathered in large numbers at the temple and offered puja to the serpent god. A large number of devotees visited the Anantha Padmanabha temple at Kudupu from the early hours of the day and sought blessings of snake god by offering milk, honey, ghee, tender coconut water, turmeric and flowers.

Hundreds of devotees stood in queue to get the Darshan of the deity at Kudupu temple.

The serpent god occupies a distinct place in the coast and the day is celebrated because Lord Krishna had killed 'Kalinga Sarpa' on this day. On the day of Nagara Panchami the devotees worship snakes to ward off evil spirits.

Agree, snakes do not drink milk however it is a age old symbolic custom (Abishek) where the engravings of Gods and such were bathed to purify before pooja. For some reason milk was considered to be the most revered and humble cleansing agent (purity). As we live the religions, customs may or may not change, some things have to be respected with a pinch of salt without irreverence to other cultural practices. After all we belong to the same Race.
