Udupi, Aug 14: “The anxiety and confusion during implementation of GST in the country are done away with and the country has witnessed progress in the collection of taxes. Central tax network works under cooperative union now. Such a system is not implemented in any other country,” said Mangaluru central Excise and Service Tax commissioner Dr M Subramanyam.

He was speaking after laying foundation for a building for central tax, Central Excise Division, range offices and guest house in a programme held at Bannanje here under the aegis of union finance, department of excise and indirect taxes.

“Rs 1,800 crore were being collected in the country before the implementation of GST. After 1,680 businesses were brought under the purview of taxes, Rs 3,300 crore is being collected. Operations were conducted against smuggling in 1980. Collection of taxes has improved now without check posts. Suspicions before implementation of GST have disappeared,” he said.

Central PWD Mysuru circle engineer G S Nayak said that the building construction will be completed and inaugurated in a year. The building being constructed at a cost of Rs 4.57 crore has a two floored office. There will be a guest house on one floor, he said.

Mangaluru's additional commissioner Imamuddin Ahmed was present. Udupi office superintendent Nagaraja Nayari welcomed and compered the programme.

Mysuru's CPWD superintendent D S Nayak and Sachin Kamath Alake were present.
