Ease of Living Index: Mangaluru ahead of Bengaluru - 41st rank in India

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Aug 14: No Karnataka city figures even in the top 25 Indian cities in the Ease of Living Index, which rates Pune as the best city to live in. Bengaluru was rated 55th among major cities surveyed to assess living conditions of urban areas in the country. Mangaluru is ahead of Bengaluru with 41st rank.

Navi Mumbai bagged the second place followed by Greater Mumbai. Temple town Tirupati was ranked fourth in the country.

The survey was commissioned by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in 111 major cities, including all urban clusters selected to be developed as smart cities.

Maharashtra has 3 cities in the top list. But out of 7 cities surveyed from Karnataka, no city makes it to the top list. Mangaluru ranks 41st in the list as best in Karnataka while Davanagere ranks 83rd as the last from the state.

Belagavi got the 52nd rank, Hubballi-Dharwad 57th rank, Bengaluru city bagged 58, Shivamogga 67 and Tumakuru 70.

Delhi came at the 65th place and Rampur in Uttar Pradesh figured at the bottom of the livability index. Chennai has been ranked 14th, while Kolkata did not participate in the survey.

This is the first-ever exercise undertaken by the ministry to rank the country's major cities on the basis of four key parameters of ease of living, governance, social aspects — including educational institutions, healthcare, economic criteria — including job opportunities and physical infrastructure, including solid waste management, electricity and water supply.

Releasing the index, Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the Ease of Living Index enables cities to assess livability vis-a-vis global and national benchmarks and encourage them to have a better approach in urban planning and management.

India needs an ease of dying index so that tourists and businessmen can avoid cities with high rates of murder and violence. Cities in UP, MP, Rajasthan and other BJP ruled states would rank high in an ease of dying index.

Everyone is commenting here without looking at the report. Mangalore is best in Karnataka in most parameters. The Ease of Living Index has 78 indicators classified across 15 categories and organized under four pillars: Institutional (Governance), Social Institutions, Economic and Physical infrastructure.

Mangalore fared bad in public open spaces category and job opportunities.

Ease of Living index was created to show mirror to cities and bring in competition among cities to improve themselves. It is like Swachh Sarvekshan, which has resulted in life of 3 lakh saved according to World Bank. Is it better to have survey or not to have survey like in the previous government.

Mangaluru is 41 in the national rating of cities of India.

Now I am wondering which is that international authority that listed Mangalore as one of the top 20 cities next to Los Angeles and Munich ? Wasn't that a bogus list created by some builder mafia that wanted to sell off their unsold units ?

Every city has it's own time. First it was Kolkata, then Madras, later these places were sidelined and started moving to Mumbai, now Mumbai is too losing it's popularity. Similarly Bengaluru too has it's own duration, The next boom towns will definitely be Mangaluru, Pune etc provided you won't vote Nalin Kumar again.

What is meant by ease of living ?. Whether I am safe if walk on a road. Any girl or boy is safe if they practice different religion and talk or walk together. Do we have footpaths where we can walk. Are our commercial establishments are accountable for defective products or cheating customers. Is our municipal authorities are only take tax from us and no development is done. Are we swindled by money lenders. Are our farmers and workers are safe. Can we eat what we want. Can we die peace
