23-year-old arrested for duping over 100 teenage girls of Rs 1L

Mumbai, Aug 12 (TNN): A 23-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly swindling Rs 1lakh from over 100 teenage girls under the pretext of hiring them for a commercial event.

According to a complaint by one of the victims, Abida Abubakar Khan alias Samrin posed as an event coordinator for a reputable electronics company and asked her to rope in 100 volunteers for an event. The Charkop police said Khan offered them a pay of Rs 2,000 a day, but demanded Rs 1,000 from each of the girls for registration.

“We collectively gave her Rs 1lakh. However, she did not give us any work and kept claiming that the event had been postponed owing to several reasons. On August 6, she called all of us at Bandra railway station for the event, but on reaching there, we were again told that the event had been deferred. Despite the postponement, she promised to pay us for that day,” said the complainant, who is also a teenager. When the girl realised that Khan had taken them for a ride, she filed a police complaint on August 10.

“We registered a case of cheating and impersonation against the woman and arrested her,” said Pramod Dhavare, senior inspector of Charkop police station.
