Mangaluru: Pumpwell flyover work to regain momentum shortly

Mangaluru, Aug 8: The work on Pumpwell flyover, which has been limping since the last many years, is likely to regain momentum shortly. It is said that the contractor firm has decided to fix girders within a few days. During this period, some traffic diversions would be needed.

In a few days, vehicles would be allowed only one-way traffic from under the under-construction flyover. As such, vehicles moving towards Padil, Thokkottu etc from Kankanady can move from under the flyover. For this purpose, the firm executing the flyover work has removed things which were heaped on the road below the flyover and asphalted this stretch. However, vehicles moving to Kankanady from the direction of Padil will have to move by taking round trip around the flyover. Similar arrangements have been made for Thokkottu flyover.

Traffic at Pumpwell on August 8 with a lorry trapped under flyover

As per the current plan, vehicles would be allowed to move from under the flyover from Kankanady towards Padil when the work on the flyover will begin. As there is a huge drain and road leading to Nanthoor, further traffic diversions may be needed in course of time. A minor bridge here also is expected to create problems for the flyover work.

Vehicles moving to Pumpwell from Kankanady area have to move on one part of the flyover while the vehicles going to Kankanady from Padil have to take a u-turn before moving ahead.

The flyover work has been pending since long for various reasons including political reasons. Pressure has been brought by the MP, case for delay in execution has been filed against the contracting firm, and union surface transport minister, Nitin Gadkari, is expected to bring pressure. The Pumpwell flyover which is just 600 metres in length and 20 metres in width has taken over seven years so far and yet works are pending. It is hoped that the concerned will join together to complete the work at the earliest at least now.

Only few dozen Congress workers protest has finally made the incomplete bridge construction to start.

I would like request Congress, JD(S),Communist and other opposition parties to investigated the Rs14,000 crores development as claimed by sitting Mangalore MP.

As one of the reader pointed this urban development work is not planned by the professional. If 1980 designed truck have close call hitting overhead bridge, i don't think so Mangalore with sea port connectivity large consignment through modern transport means can pass under this bridge.

This bridge does can't pass any Engineering standards may be shook to the rubble even for mild earthquakes.

After all Mangaloreans prefered for 'Hindutva' over 'development' and voted BJP to power for 25 years. For the valuables votes this the minimum standard they can expect.

I wonder how this city qualify to be 'smart city' when smart people lost their ability choose wise peoples representatives?

Pathetic construction! The trucks are almost grazing the underside of the flyover. Have serious doubts if any engineering is involved? Appears like some contractor is building with absolute no knowledge of infrastructure works. The BC road flyover is also pathethic and would not have been approved if they were to be built in any developed countries.

The onstruction work of both the flyover was stated early by navayug. However it was our MLA khader who stopped the work . He wanted better arragements which was later turned down by nha. The flyoverwork never picked up thereafter . Imponding of assets of Jaggan reddy aggracated the situation. The work got started only after BJP came to power. Though mr oskar fernades was made higways mininister during UPA . Nothing happened. Why blame current mp

Hope it won't collapse after completing. Most of the delayed bridges or flyovers are collapsed, many citizens & workers died.

Citizens, please take care and be aware of this poor quality of work.

If we had an educated Member of Parliament instead of a rabble-rouser, we would have had a modern city by now.

This Flyover looks so crude. It has an uneven surface and rugged edges.

But foolish voters of DK have been electing BJP since 1991 because they like getting fooled in the name of Mandir and cows.

@Edmond - For your KIND info.

    1. NHAI or National Highways report to the Central Government and it is the job of Member of Parliament (M.P) to expedite such work.
    2. MLA's who are state representatives and have no say in expediting such work.
    2. Incompetent Nalin is a MP since 2009 and DK is having a BJP MP since 1990. What is the use of sending them to Delhi Lok Sabha if they cannot get a job done?

The said flyover should be demolished and new taller one should be built. The lorry barely made through the opening. The cheap contractor wanted to save money by way of concrete, steel and labour.

Mangaluru deserves Singapore/Hong Kong type of road network, underpasses and fly overs. But, we need an educated and efficient MP to achieve it!

DK is having a BJP MP continuously since 1991. Its high time that BJP is defeated, as in a democracy handing over power to a party for too long leads to autocracy and incompetence. Congress should win from DK this time.

Most of our flyovers resemble snake....rough edges and unfinished surfaces. Corruption is clearly visible compared to beautifully built and properly painted, provision for electrical wiring and lighting in most countries flyovers and underpasses.
The structures waiting for inauguration looks like structures ready for demolition to make way for new one! Thats the way our public works goes be it any political party.
