CID to probe 'baby sale' by Missionary of Charity

Ranchi, Jul 20 (IANS): The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of the Jharkhand police on Friday took over a case involving alleged sale of newborn babies from Nirmal Hriday of Missionary of Charity to childless couples.

"The CID has taken over the case registered under the Juvenile Justice Act," the police said.

The 'babies-for-sale' case surfaced on July 3 after reports emerged about the sale of six children to childless couples and the alleged involvement of Missionary of Charity, a philanthropic organisation founded by Mother Teresa.

The police registered a case on July 4.

The FIR says the baby of an unwed girl staying in Charity Home was sold to a couple from Uttar Pradesh. The police interrogated two sisters from Nirmal Hriday, Konsilia and Meridian. The police said they have "confessed" to their crime.

The police also arrested another nun and a staff member of Missionary of Charity. Three children were recovered based on their information, the police said.

The police say six newborns have been sold to childless couples in the last one year.

The sale of babies came to light when a couple who had taken a newborn baby from the charity home filed a complaint with the Child Welfare Society . The couple had reportedly paid RS 1.20 lakh in the name of medical-care and delivery of the child.

The UP-based couple had reportedly "purchased" the newborn in May this year. The baby was taken back by the charity home with an assurance that it would return the child after a court procedure. As they did not get the child back, the couple complained to the Child Welfare Society.

Our prevalent adoption rules are too harsh and to some extent denies natural justice.
Rules may have been framed my be in abundant precaution, it may sound, giving children for adoption is criminal activity.
But the rules make the work of orphanages and adoption defeating the work of good orphanages.
These orphanages take good care and look after abandoned children, in reality there is nothing criminal, if in due course of time, if such children are given to those who really seek to adopt them.
Orphanages have huge expenses to look after children.
If some are adopted, they make space for caring new ones!

The Missionaries of Charity needs to be extra vigilant while taking fees or donations and be transparent in its accounting procedures.
In this divide and rule policy of our govt, there are people from a certain community affiliated to a right wing political organisation, who want to bring disrepute and see the downfall of this organisation, at all costs...They do not care about the social service and goodwill that MoC has built up and harnessed between various communities for all these years.

Ultimately all the laws that are enacted not only in the country but in the WHOLE UNIVERSE, should pass the test of natural justice!
If, the laws itself DETERRENT to natural justice and denies the natural justice to abandoned, orphaned etc. M.O.C should move to the highest court ! Truth have to prevail, can't be denied!

Let the CID or CBI probe nobody cares. What the nation is worried is the probe should be unbiased and truth should prevail. It should not be a doctored report to please those in power. The CWC should return to the Sisters the women and children taken away from the Missionaries of charity. World over the MC sisters are doing an exemplary work. GOD who is JUST will deliver them unscathed from such deliberate attempts to tarnish their name.

There are medical expenses during pregnancy and delivery process. The hospital bills have to be paid and generally the family who adopts the child pays for it. If a child is born to me I have to pay all hospital bills. So if you are adopting a baby you have bare the cost of medical care. They did not ask for lakhs of rupees, only for the medical expense. The press/media is trying to tarnish all the good work done by the Missionary of Charity, This is not fair.

    @Nancy,

Please read the article and please don't justify the wrong thing and accept that mistakes do happen by ALL normal human beings.

You said- " They did not ask for lakhs of rupees. The couple just paid medical care expense" as they adopted the child.
So do you think this huge amount of 1.2 lakh paid by the couple is medical care expense, that too in hospital run by Missionaries of Charity Hospital?
Further, even if it is agreed that this 1.2 lakh is paid as the medical care expense, then why the nuns confessed before the investigators? For taking medical expenses by the Hospital?

The Missionaries of Charity stopped placing children for adoption in 2015 as they did not agree with new Government guidelines as to who can adopt. So these were illegal adoptions done by a person who was working in one of their facilities.
