Mangaluru, Jul 19: Kalyanmayee unit of Airport Authority of India (AAI), Mangalore International Airport (MIA), conducted awareness campaign on menstrual hygiene here at government women’s polytechnic college, Bondel on Thursday, July 19, under the CSR initiative of AAI.

President of Kalyanmayee Sujana Rao said, "Kalyanmayee is conducting awareness programmes about menstrual hygiene throughout the country as part of its CSR initiative. Hygiene and health are co related, while health and physical activity is interlinked. When there is hygiene, even health will be maintained. We should be aware about our surroundings and maintain cleanliness. I urge the management of the college to provide clean environment and if there is any problem, you need to bring it to the notice of the management to resolve issues immediately.”

Speaking on menstrual hygiene, addressing the students, former psychology lecturer Verina Joshna said, "Menstruation starts at the age of 12 to 14 or after 14 years. During this time there will be changes in your body features and this is nature’s gift. Usually, periods will be for three to five days. If it continues for more than a week, then you need to consult to a doctor.

“One sanitary napkin pad should not be used for more than eight hours. Meanwhile, make sure that your inner wear is also changed. A few of them may prefer cloth pads which should be avoided. Using sanitary napkins is good to maintain hygiene and is also comfortable.

"You should maintain yourself clean, take bath daily and keep your body parts clean to avoid infection. Even while disposing used pads, throw them into dustbins by wrapping them in a piece of paper,” she said.

Principal of the polytechnic college B N Kumbar said, "AAI has taken the initiative of creating awareness among students about menstrual hygiene. We have been doing such awareness programmes through NSS. In the coming days, Kalyanmayee will install sanitary napkin vending machine here.”

Kalyanmayee will install sanitary napkin vending machine in schools to provide sanitary napkins for girls at an affordable price, so that they can easily manage the menstrual flow and need not take leaves during their menstruation period. Kalyanmayee is also educating women about the benefits of using sanitary napkins through camps.

Meanwhile, sanitary pads were distributed to the students.

Coordinator of Kalyanmayee and PA to airport director Hazel Concessao welcomed the gathering.
