India to build 2,000 kms of international roads by 2022: Minister

New Delhi, Jul 19 (IANS): The government is planning to build 1,911 kilometres of international connectivity roads over the five year period ending 2022 under its flagship Bharatmala scheme, parliament was told on Thursday.

Moreover, it is also planning to 3,319 kms of border roads, Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Mansukh Mandaviya told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

"Under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, it is proposed to develop 1,911 kms of international connectivity roads and 3,319 kms of border roads with an outlay of Rs 25,000 crore over a period of five years i.e. from 2017-18 to 2021-22 in phased manner," he said.

    Highway with Bridges and flyovers or without? Pumpwell, Thokkottu Flyovers? International means, our side country, may be! It can mean Made in India solely for export purpose which won't enter Indian Market.

    Creation of International Roadways will be the best way to connect India with all our immediate International neighbor, and beyond. Unfortunately, our immediate International neighbors are Pakistan on the West and Bangladesh in East, and no doubt Sri Lanka in the South. Linkage with International neighbors is the best means of communication and enrich our trade and travel privileges. So long as there are properly established Immigration and Customs procedures, all the rest of the problems can be managed.

    United States is bordered with Canada in the North and Mexico in the South. As much as the border check posts are rigid, life moves along smoothly all the time and the peaceful life prevails.

    International Roadways can be a great privilege for India for trade, tourism and travel. We all have to learn how to live together amicably with least of obstacles. May God help us all.

    “We are building 20 km/day of new roads.” This is an often heard statement made by everyone from Nitin Gadkari to every Tom, Dick, and Bhagwat of the BJP.
    According to the report submitted by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Research Wing, as of 31 March 2014, India had a total of 91,287 km of national highways.
    Here, I am assuming that when the BJP says, “We are building 20 km/day of new roads every day”, they mean NEW ROADS and not repairing the old roads, as that is plain stupid to consider an old road being repaired as the new road.
    As per the latest information available on the government website, the current length of national highways under the NHAI stands at 10,0087 km.
    Let’s now play some counting games!

    20 km/day in three years. Any idea how much would this add up to?

    20 X 3 X 365 = 21,900 km (What BJP claims they have built since forming the government at the Centre in May 2014.)

    For those pretending to be intelligent BJP supporters, who would say, “but how can you count Sunday, when it’s holiday?’ Even after excluding Sundays, the figure still comes to 18,780 km. But since this BJP government is ‘known’ to work 24 X 7 every week under a hard-working prime minister, I am going with the previous figure.

    10,0087 (current length of national highways under the NHAI) – 91,287 (length of national highways as on 31 March 2014) = 8,800 km. This is what the Modi government’s own data claims what they have built in little over 3 years in office.
    So, in effect, we have 21,900 – 8,800 = 13,100 km of national highways missing to justify the BJP spokespersons claims on TV channels.
    So where has this 13,100 km of national highways been built? In Nitin Gadkari’s backyard or in Nagpur inside the RSS headquarter?
    Please don’t tell me that BJP is building toy lego model highways in their playroom as he frolics with his Nagpur buddies and has fun tagging them as national highways.
    We have 13,100 km of national highways gone missing. Let find them before 2022?

    Please check how road lenghth calculation is done globally. It is done by carriage ways - 3 lanes each way would mean length of one lane multiplied by number of lanes. When your sole purpose is to criticize BJP, facts don't matter much anyways.

    You augment as if you are asking the tailor to measure the cloth you wanted to stitch in Milli Meters rather than meters.
