Women can pray in Sabarimala, ‘she has same right as a man’: SC

Mumbai, Jul 18(DC): “Once you open a temple, everyone can go,” said the Supreme Court on Wednesday while hearing the matter of an arbitrary, temple-enforced ban on women between 10 and 50 years from entering the Sabarimala in Kerala.

A five-judge bench of the Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Rohinton Nariman, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra are hearing petitions filed by Indian Young Lawyers Association and others challenging the ban in vogue for several years.

Counsel Ravi Prakash Gupta submitted that women devotees between the age group of 10 to 50 were being denied entry into the temple and their touching the feet of Lord Ayyappa had been considered as a desecration of the Hindu deity. ‘Menstruation’ was the reason cited for such prohibition by the temple trust.

Justice D Y Chandrachud said: “One’s right to pray being a woman, is equal to that of a man and it is not dependent on a law to enable one to do that."

Chief Justice of India Dipak Mishra asked temple authorities: “On what basis do you deny (women) entry? It is against the Constitutional mandate. Once you open it for public, anybody can go."

The Kerala government’s stand was that women should be allowed to offer prayers in Sabarimala temple. Minister K Surendran said: “We've filed an affidavit in SC explaining our stand. We're bound to obey its verdict.”

Women are cannot be equal to men that’s why they have menstruation . But women have very important role in society . Women are first teacher of the every child. Honouring women in society is very important part of social structure. It doesn’t mean that women are equal to men or they are weaker than men . Woman is a mother , heaven under mother’s feat .

This system of banning ladies banning from entering Temples and even conducting masses in the church has to be stopped for ever. If God has created females with menstruation every month, he will never dislike them even if they perform in the temples or churches during menstruation. This is just a excuse created by men for their own benefit. If a priest who does adultery and performs in the temple/Church, then why not women.

Very good move by SC. Hats off, equal right to pray both the genders. This is the living example of untouchability having been practiced by ancient people in India. The women are treated as second class citizen for no fault of theirs.

    Hey svt,

It is very clear that child selling in WB was just a gimmick by the police and media and nothing has been proven. The Missionaries of Charity had a press conference and explained in detail why the accusers where after them. It is very easy to malign and accuse Christians of conversion, child trafficking, prostitution, drugs, money laundering, kidnapping as they are weak in resorting to violence unlike your community. The Missionaries of Charity are doing a great service to mankind taking care of sick and dying where you will not even think of staying close even for a minute but accusation, you will be first in queue. The media needs their daily dose of spicy headlines and they don't care for morals. All they need is to sell their newspaper with big bold headlines and don't care for the damage done to others.

In the 21st Century people still expect every one to strictly follow and believe in the pre-historic traditions and culture.
Better believe and value such traditions but not necesarily ensure that we need to continue for ever what was in practice 100's of years ago.
Even Saudi Arabia with all the Islamic traditions and rules have liberlized their point of view about women and are trying to step into modern times.
Our forefathers were never in use of briefs/pants and shoes.

What an irony... people dont have jobs, moeny, food to feed them and thier families, no social or self security... Governments are formed on the pretext that they will make reforms and policies to aid these people .. But then what are we fighting for?? religion, god, caste, cows and politicians.. We are ready to invoke the SC to provide justice in these cases, but dont have the sense to invoke the SC to question the government on thier promises, policies, reforms and decisions... Well done India.. at this rate the bronze age is not very far for us all...
