Mangaluru: Shock from high-tension wire - one dead, eight seriously injured

Mangaluru Jul 18: One MESCOM contract worker died and eight were seriously injured after coming in contact with high-tension wire near Maravoor bus stand on Wednesday July 18.

Deceased has been identified as Ganesh (55) resident of Edapadavu.

Dinesh, Vishwanath, Anand, Gopal, Krishna, Dhananjaya, Padmanab and Mohan are the injured persons.

13 MESCOM contract workers were installing new electric pole. During this work, they came in contact with the high-tension wire of old electric pole nearby.





It is alleged that the negligence of MESCOM to switch off the power of high-tension wire before taking up the work, led to the death of a contract worker and injury to eight persons.

Injured have been shifted to a private hospital,

Bajpe police have registered the case.

    Extremely distressing to hear -death of labourer and injured colleagues. All over the streets of Mangalore -Time and again -we see Mescom contract workers -working without proper safety equipment, no supervison. , no planning as no Officer AT SITE.
    There is utter disregard for safe procedure - no officer attends and over a period of time -workers develop Contempt for higher ups-result we can see- charred bodies, open electrical boxes , transformers on ROAD because crooked builders want to make money-unsightly and dangerous wires hanging - poles without support. Are we so poor at performance -not only that-is the public even aware of the DANGERS that LURK as they walk by these open death invitations

    Talking politics in this regard is an insult to the person who lost his life and the rest who are in the hospital. If possible extend a helping hand or just keep quite. The way governments work I don't think these contract labourers will be taken care of by either mescom or kptcl.

    We are seldom aware and appreciative of the hard and risky work these employees are exposed to. Life lost due to total negligence by MESCOM. The employees are hardly given safety tools except low quality gloves. These poor employees are left to God's mercy.

    Very sad. Not only MESCON, even the sub contractor/their electrical & engineering team should be held responsible. The labourers may not be knowing the electrical points and connections. It is the electrician of the Subcontractor and MESCON's responsibility to disconnect the electricity in that area, while erecting the electric pole.

    I do not know, some readers are enjoying comments even at the death. Really sad.

    It is the responsibility of the Contractor who undertakes the Line work to approach the concerned Section Officer of the Mescom of the jurisdictional area to obtain Line Clearance from them. Only after obtaining Line Clearance from the concerned Oficer, then only he has to undertake the work, whether errection of the poles, Transformers,

    A few years ago, a young boy of the Lincensed Electrical Contractor came to our area and tried to switch off the Transformer located next to my house, without informing the concerned Mescom jurisdictional Office. I took the boy to task and called the MESCOM Official. The Contractor can not escape the responsibility and it is duty of the Licensed Contractor to obtain line clearance before starting the work. Even the general Public can not touch the power lines and transformers without permission. Do not expect the MESCOM Official to be there at each and every place. Jai Hind.

    We think by blaming others problem can be solved but it is our stupid act. It is negligence of all including the deceased person. Make sure the work environment is safe as per the policy.

    This due to high voltage in the wire but who knows afters 5 years these workers can work without any fear that high current will pass in this wire..... ( may be after 5 years there will not be any current)

    Unless MESCOM officials are criminally prosecuted, this type of incidences will continue to happen. Whatever may be the cause, safety of people is the main responsibility of MESCOM officials. Concerned person should be sacked, arrested and prosecuted.

    You cant blame MESCOM. I came to know this later that both are in different business. Mescom provides to our city whereas KPTCL is in long distance transmission of power.
    We had 5 cents of our land covered with trees. one fine day the come and chop half the land down. I had visited KPTCL office at kavoor and told the officials your MESCOM people came and cut my trees. He said we have no connection with MESCOM and dont call us MESCom.. Then he explained me how both of them are different
