Midfielder Zimmermann swaps Stuttgart for Dusseldorf

Berlin, Jul 17 (IANS): Newly promoted Fortuna Dusseldorf have signed Matthias Zimmermann from league rivals Stuttgart, both football sides said.

Dusseldorf have bolstered up their midfield with the signing of defensive midfielder Matthias Zimmermann, who penned a two-year deal until June 2020, reports Efe.

"Matthias is a strong player who can be fielded variably. He can not only play on the right back position but he can also play in the defensive midfield," Dusseldorf head coach Friedhelm Funkel said on Monday.

Zimmermann played since 2015 for Stuttgart where he made 66 appearances, providing two goals and one assist.

"I am really looking forward to my time at Dusseldorf. I have often played against Dusseldorf. It has always been exciting duels and it was always a tough encounter," Zimmermann told the club's official homepage.

Fortuna Dusseldorf completed the season 2017-18 on the first place of the Bundesliga 2 standings. Hence, they secured their promotion to play their 24th season in Germany's top flight.
