Beltangady, Jul 17: In an incident which happened at Periyottu, Barya village in the taluk on Monday July 16, an aged couple committed suicide together.

The deceased couple were Sanjeeva Poojary (60) from Periyottu, and his wife, Seetha (57). Both closed the doors of a room inside their home and consumed poison. While Sanjeeva died on the spot, Seetha, who was found in a critical condition, breathed her last on her way to the hospital.

It is gathered that Sanjeeva used to suffer from asthma and heart-related ailments since sometime. He used to earn his living by working as coolie, but because of his health problems, he was unable to do any work since a few months. The health condition of Seetha too was not good. It is felt that health issues would have worked on their minds when they took decision to kill themselves.

Out of three children of the couple, two daughters were married off. Their son, Janardana Poojary, is also married and he stayed with parents.

When the incident happened, Janardana Poojary's wife, Mohini, was at home. She said that her father-in-law normally used to be inside the room because of ill health, and her mother-in-law often gave company to her husband. "Both were at home since afternoon. After sometime, I heard groaning sound from the room. I rushed to the room but it was bolted from inside. I went up the stairs and peeped in and found that both of them were writhing in pain. I then put together neighbours, broke open the door and entered in by which time, my father-in-law had died, and my mother-in-law was in serious condition," she explained.

The family recollects Sanjeeva saying to his wife when suffering from ill health, that both of them could together die. However, the others had thought that it was a casual statement.

Uppinangady police sub-inspector, Nandakumar, visited the spot and undertook scrutiny. A case was registered in Uppinangady police station.

Immoral brigades have all the information of youth where they roam, eat and so on . But no information about their own parents! Pity state of affairs.

In this case, the immoral brigades do not get hafta, money from the forceful robbery of animals and at the back door are selling to the butchery. Where as to take care of the ill health old people; is no income generation rather additional burden. This is their real true colour. They tell you, that is their karma and we are not part of it. Very simple way of escaping.

Old age combined with lack of funds or savings, ill health and being ignored by own children may make the aging parents feel desperate and leftout alone in life. Very sad and bad to pass such stage in life. Poverty is the main reason. Government alone cannot fight to support such causes. Finally, it is called the fate.

This case is a sad reflection of our society. Its the failure of our human community. We have money lavishly to spend for our celebrations, building places of worship, electioneering and so on. How many of us contribute to support for causes like this? Every community, religiion wise, caste wise, locality wise, village wise need to have funds for this kind of purposes. We need to look beyond the luxuries and comfots in our homes and stretch our hands to the helpless needy.

Very sad. Such stories remind you that we need a proper community/government sponsored programme to deal with old people and their needs. Modern Society sees old people as burden and its easy for old people to fall into depression and contemplate suicide because of their health issues. Also poverty adds to the misery.

So sad. Old age in todays time seems like a curse with nuclear family.
Even if its not nuclear family the bonding and care is almost zero.
People just stay together in a house.. They dont live happily in each others company.
With cost of living and medical expenses rising there is no way a poor couple can live independently.
They lived a dignified life and would never want to be a burden.
Where is our world and humanity heading to I wonder.
Racing towards technological advancement we have lost all the basic human values.

Really we don't want anna bagya, sala manna, shadi bagya, free bus pass, pension , free laptop , free mobile etc... We really want free medical facility all over India.. Nowadays running hospital become business. all treatments are above lacks only. And in govt hospitals either there no basic facility or no experienced doctors. So this is the time to think about nationalize all the hospitals how honorable ex PM Indira gandhi did the nationalization of buses and banks.

This is heart breaking news. We pay tax so that Government provides necessary felicities to the poor. Cost of living is increasingly becoming out of reach for low wage workers, specially old age people. How a ordinary worker can cope up with rising living cost and also medical cost?. Few weeks back, a girl slipped and drowned while crossing bamboo bridge. Why Government can't look into such issues and provide basic facilitates? This couple is not very old but they must have felt not to be burden to the family. Old age crises in India is very serious!
