Udupi, Jul 15: A day-long workshop on cyber crime for police personnel was organised by district police department under the aegis of District Legal Services Authority, was held at conference hall, district superintendent of police office Bannanje on Saturday, July 14.
Justice Venkatesh Naik T, district and session court and president of District Legal Services Authority, inaugurated the programme.
Addressing the gathering, Justice Venkatesh said, “India is a developing country in terms of technology. When usage of computer, internet and social media are on the rise, the case of misuse is also increasing. Cyber crimes are increasing due to technological development. Crimes are now turning scientific. Police must have knowledge of cyber crimes. It has become a big challenge.
“Innocent people and senior citizens are easy victims. Hackers get down into computers easily. Offers come in the form of attractive advertisements, SMS, emails and phone calls. If people gets caught in that circle, they are in trouble.
“Pornographic videos are affecting children. There is need to create awareness among public and old age people as they tend to give personal details only on faith. Awareness must be created from home itself. There is absolutely no need to reply to all unknown calls and messages. Information and Technology Act was enforced in 2008. Penalty, compensation and other norms are mentioned under section 43-47. CRPC is mentioned in Column 78.
“The police must give justice to victims and they should responsd immediately to complainants. It is their duty. All offences must be investigated properly,” he said.
SP Lakshman Nimbargi said, “There will be no physical (face-to-face) contact between criminal and victims in cyber-crimes. Detecting the accused is very difficult in the beginning. When technology grows, investigation will be difficult. It is not only a challenge for India, but also a global problem.
“There is need to create awareness among more people and students about impact of social media. There is lack of knowledge of cyber crimes. Therefore, more articles should be published in media,” he said.
The chief guest of the event, Latha, senior civil judge and member secretary of District Legal Services Authority, Shanthi Bai, public prosecutor, and Varadaraj, assistant professor, Florida University were present.
Dr Ananth Prabhu, cyber crime laws and security trainer, KPA Mysuru, imparted details of cyber crime investigation.
Jyothi Nayak, assistant public prosecutor and Mumtaz, junior legal officer were honoured for their promotion.
