Udupi: Car-tempo collision at Santhekatte – two dead, two serious

Udupi Jul 14: As a result of a collision that took place between a car and a tempo, two persons died and two suffered serious injuries on Saturday, July 14.

As per details available now, the car, Hyundai Verna, belonged to a doctor from Manipal, but it was driven by one of his friends named Shravan Ganapathi Hegde at the time of accident.

The car was moving from Udupi. It hit a goods tempo which moved in the opposite direction near Santhekatte Bridge. The tempo was moving from Kundapur. The driver of the tempo Sundara Shettygar (50) died on spot while Shravan (28) died on the way to hospital. 

 

Hegde lived in Bengaluru with his mother. He had come to his native place to get some documents done. 

Sundara worked as tempo driver for the past 30 years.

    Unfortunately the 4 laning of highway has made it into a death trap instead of becoming a safe one!. Just see the way crossings, turning are given at ambalpady, Kallianpur etc. If it rains and you drive at night on this road, it's a total blind drive one because of incoming vehicles high beams and absence of street lights and two water logging which just splashes on windscreen from all sides!. I am thinking of people who are alive today but may find themselves dead tomorrow on this highway!

    Lot of people come. In wrong side just because crossing is far And the innocent s. Who are comming in correct direction are victims. Traffic police needs to consented on this issue. Specially between Udyavar bridge and balaipade udupi aria

    A terrible accident. RIP those deceased and wish a speedy recovery of the ones injured in this deadly accident. Drivers should driver with care due to the rainy season. Roads are slippery and is dangerous to drive in high speed.

    It looks like one driver killed other driver and injured 2 others and committed suicide.
    Unless there had any technical issues with the vehicle. Nothing else can be concluded.
    one had made a deliberate mistake.

    Our Highway authorities and traffic police will not learn even after seeing so many dead bodies and injured on the road on a daily basis.

    Highly unsafe crossovers, vehicles entering highways from where ever they want, going in wrong direction is all common in our highways.

    DRIVERS PLEASE FOLLOW THE TRAFFIC MANNERS....WE HAVE FOUR LANES BUT STILL DRIVERS DRIVE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE TO SAVE FUEL... WE CAN BUY FUEL FOR MONEY BUT NOT THE LIVES LOST. POLICE HAVE TO PENALISE HEAVILY FOR THE DRIVERS WHO DRIVE ON THE WRONG SIDE.

    I agree with you, but other hand High ways authorities have not provided service roads as they promised. This highway is totally failure, each accident if it causes due to the technical reasons of Highway Authorities, then they have to compensate.

    Daily we read peoples dieing a lot that to a lot young
    Govt should implement very strict rules and heavy fines to control speed
    And license should be given only after 25 years
    Or we loose a lot young people daily because of road accident

    Hello sir , what about these people who violated traffic? I don't think so the Matador Driver was young , We most of the young people/youths know traffic rules , but most of the elders I have seen without helmet , Speaking on phone , Going in opposite direction, if we youths question them they get on their nerves and say who are we ? I got many examples, bus drivers, auto wala's , some elder 30+ Taxi drivers have attitudes. Less % people follow rules here in Udupi. There are many examples where elders commit crime. Please don't blame youths all the time , Soch badlo tab hamara Desh badlega .
    I wish our Udupi Cops turn very strict like Mangaluru cops , they don't compromise to traffic violations, they click instant Snaps of traffic violators , I wish to see this Trend here soon .

    This highway from Mangalore to Kundapura is death trap .. How many more life it will take. Santhekatte Kallianpura is one of the most dangerous junction.

    Very sad such an accident has occurred. Someone was at proper fault here- the road from Udupi to Kundapur via Santhekatte is a dual carriageway, there's no reason why two vehicles should collide head on on the same road.

    I heard like the driver got a phone call and in a hurry to attempt it, he lost the control over the car and went over the divider to hit the van coming from opposite direction.
