Udupi: Wearing seatbelts made mandatory for car drivers in district

Udupi, Jul 14: Responding quickly to the demand from the general public, district superintendent of police (SP) Laxman Nimbargi, issued a circular to the traffic police, making wearing of seatbelts mandatory for car drivers in the district.

The SP took this decision instantly after this issue came to his notice. SP received a complaint from a citizen during weekly phone-in programme that was held on Friday last.

SP Nimbargi said that he would be launching a special drive for 15 days in the district on three issues of wearing seatbelts, vehicles with tint glasses, and removing of name boards from the number plates of non-government's officials.

More than 85 cases have been booked in the city against violation of driving norms, said traffic police. The checking process is continuing in the district. Anyone found driving a vehicle without wearing seatbelt would be violating law and hence he would be booked. The police will fine Rs 100 for the first offence.

Wearing of seatbelts would considerably reduce the rate of injury or deaths in case of accidents. Compulsory wearing of helmets by two-wheeler rider has already been strictly enforced by the police department.

There were complaints during the phone-in programme. Based on this, the district police department took up this initiative. Traffic police have been keeping a close watch on vehicles and also check the unauthorized name boards and number plates of vehicles.

    Good move.Seat belts should be mandatory not only to driver but too to passengers .(So long 5persons)in India numbers of passengers are not less than 5.Even passengers too will be get injured in case of accident.Fine the driver atleast 500Rs,in case of violating.100 rupees are worth may be a single cigarette.It should really pain him to pay fine ,otherwise they never learn.I saw sometimes people put belt as soon as police is in sicht.later when they pass off ,belt too is loose.why cant they think it is their safety ,not police?Here the belts are compulsory to every passenger,and children seat too be fastened with belt.otherwise driver gets fine and one point in his list of against rules after four to five points his licence is withdrawn.

    Fine should be at least 1000 for driver not wearing the seat belts while driver any 4 wheeler vehicles so that such indecent will not occur.

    My cause of concern is for Pedestrians, there are no foot paths for pedestrians in most of the areas .Roads are Concreted edge to edge. Give priority to pedestrians first.People who walk are more vulnerable to accidents than the people who travel in Vehicles within city limits.

    Another cause of concern is the Rs 100 fine for violators. The fine seems to be too small and insignificant. I am of a strong belief that, inorder to implement a rule effectively the penalty imposed has to seriously impact the violator. I believe that a fine of min Rs 1000 will help in cultivating a habit if wearing seatbelts quickly.

    Good move and a very necessary one. Finally we have a seatbelt rule in our district.
    WE could have gone a bit further though. Instead of just the driver requiring to wear a seatbelt, it should have been for everyone travelling in the car. As most of us know, during an impact, the person travelling in a car is usually thrown out of his seat and without a seatbelt, we dont know where that person will land. Possibly, injuring the person who is sincerely wearing the seatbelt.
    Another rule I am awaiting to see, is prohibiting the use of cell phones while driving. Use of cell phones while driving is a major contributor to the alarming rate of our country's road accidents.
    Please bring in this rule at the earliest to save lives.

    Please remove all audio players from buses! It's ear scattering music(I doubt it's music) they play at high volume! Few years back police used to remove them but nowadays they don't even care!!

    It is better to restrict seat belts in national highways only. Potholes on the roads are enough to control the accidents and injuries which are on rural and city roads.

    Exactly!!
    Passengers will be injured equally, at least make it compulsory for front passengers.

    And if its not a rule, dear citizens let's start this practice at our home, as a driver or passenger let's motivate others in our car to wear the seat belt. We don't want any of our relatives or friends to get injured or loose life.
    It's like not wearing shoes and instead holding in our hands while walking on tough road, when we have safety device let's make use of it.

    Please ensure that helmets worn by Scooter and Bike riders are properly buckled up.In majority of cases helmets are worn as eyewash to avoid police verification.
