Mangaluru, Jul 10: Tremors were experienced in Madikeri, Kodagu district and Subramanya in Dakshina Kannada district on Monday July 9 afternoon.

Tremors were particularly violent at Suntikoppa village and nearby areas in Kodagu. As utensils and furniture items violently shook and thunder-like sound echoed through the areas, people got fearful and ran out of their residences. A large number of people shared their experience of having felt the tremors.

A local, Manjunath, resident of Makkandur village in Madikeri taluk, stated that a huge boulder standing on a hillock suddenly slipped and fell down when the earth shook.

But it is learnt that these tremors were not recorded in the Richter scale at Bengaluru as the magnitude was less than 1. There is a chance of such a phenomenon having occurred on account of torrential rain. Senior geologist, Reshma, stated that Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre officials have clarified that they have not found any worrisome development which could have lasting impact in near future.

Villagers living around Subramanya too said that they felt tremors for about three seconds at 12.25 pm on Monday. Seconds later, they heard deafening sound which sounded like thunder.
