Mangaluru: Woman loses Rs 16 lac after Facebook friend cheats her

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Jun 25: A woman in city lost Rs 16 lac after a brief online friendship with an unidentified man.

Reshma from Attavar is the victim.

A case stands registered regarding the fraud at the cyber police station here.

As per details, Reshma received a Facebook friend request from a man named Jack Coleman. Even though she did not know him, she accepted the request and began chatting with him. They chatted regularly after that.

In May, Coleman told Reshma that he wished to make a gift of £20,000 (over Rs 18 lac) to her family. Reshma refused the gift but Coleman insisted that she should accept it.

Reshma received a call from another man who introduced himself as a customs official from New Delhi on May 9. He asked her to pay a fine on the consignment sent by Coleman.

Reshma was told by the ‘customs official’ that the package sent by Coleman had violated several rules and warned her that she would be put behind bars if she did not pay.

Reshma agreed and transferred the money via internet banking. She ended up paying Rs 16, 69,000 in all.

She tried to contact Coleman and the ‘customs official’ but all numbers were switched off.

There is a gang of thugs in Nigeria who prey upon elderly women over the phone and drain the bank accounts in USA. Hope the media makes it a top priority to educate the general public about such scams. It is common sense, why would a stranger like to make you rich? the gullible among us need awareness.

In this column, I read some of the comments abusing women. For their information, all husband's do not transfer full salary whatever they get into their wives account.. Some may give who love too much their wives.
Many houses, till today, wives are living like slaves in between the four walls. They are given just minimum amount to look after the household, to look after the children, their education, their behaviour etc. Etc. Whereas some husband's work abroad and enjoy as per their will. Even in this modern world, some of the families whose spouses are abroad are deprived of even T. V., cable, internet, not even know which class, his son or daughter is studying, their fees, their needs.. Forget about vehicles and other luxuries like AC, car scooter etc etc.

Here, Reshma alone may not have taken decision to transfer the money. Surely, her family, may be her parents, siblings have supported her in case if she is not married.. That much money all of a sudden difficult to transfer by herself. Some times even husband's are greedy and they push forward their wives in order to become rich all of a sudden.

Such things not only women, even men commit. One of my family members fallen prey to such greed. He wanted to go to Canada. He came across a local agent who assured him a job in Canada by uttering god's words every now and then. Agent took money from this fellow and sent him to Africa. Two locals of Africa approached him and put fake Canadian visa and asked him to go back to India, and return after one week. After reaching here they cancelled their three email id's. With the help of local agent from Karkal, duped my family member for around rs. 11lac.

I too experienced this situation...one early morning I got a call from a man, saying that he is a bank manager and he was asking the details of ATM card.. The card which is with me is going to change. I asked him which banks manager you are? He said state bank. I told him I will inform our local police first and then confirm with our manager whom i know.. till then you hold on the line. When I was about to dial he disconnected the phone.. After that his phone was switched off for many days.

One more episode of "Facebook Mahathme". If victim in question could transfer the amount of Rs.16.7lakh via internet/netbanking then she looks to be a educated and knew exactly what she is doing. She must have fallen for this stupid Bihari / West African fraude by the name of Jack Coleman thinking that she is well connected to highly placed people via facebook. If she is married, pity the poor husband who has to pay the heavy price for her activity on the facebook.

Good story. 21st century. brother cheat brothers who eat on one table. How can one trust the stranger? She may be having a lot of unwanted money which she may not be able to take care of.
Feel pity on her husband or father who struggled to earn this money and gifted to her.

These fraudsters get caught only when victim is a police officer or powerful politician. Chances of them getting fooled are very rare. I guess these gangs cans be traced to some city or state near Delhi. These crooks know that police complaint and and the investigation is few months away and only state capitals has cyber crime police force. From place like Magalore it will take weeks to reach the proper channel due to the procedure involved.

Very true john, me too worked in India and abroad, and I experienced these type of women, by eye washing their husbands they do all dirty things, here also she might have thought this man is an European and slowly she could run away to his country. Many women fed up with daily fish curry rice and very eager to taste biriyani and fell in a ditch.

What a foolishness? I don't think this lady is working outside her home. Because, one of the aspect of knowing the value of money, is by going to work. Many of the ladies, including me, manage the family, children and go to work to support the cost of the living. So we know how difficult it is to earn and surely none of us believe in such fraud. We are married and support our husband as its necessary today due to the high cost of living.
You cannot believe anyone as friend especially in facebook or internet. When we find difficult to trust, at times in certain cases, the known people, how can we trust a stranger. Now she has to run to pillar to post to get the money. Hope she succeeds.

These are African origin people with western or British accent fooling people in this manner. It is not the first time and certainly not the last case. Indian people too are involved and these kalias can not operate without bank account support of locals and few bank people. My highly educated friend lost to the tune of 80 lacks few months ago. If police willing...may not be difficult to nab them. Such gangs are rampant in India and world over....they squeeze people until the last drop of blood...kind of hypnotism so that victim keep the deal secret until all is lost...!!
End of the day, if some one is willing to get fooled....there are plenty to fool!!! Its a fake world for some people some time!!
Appreciate Daiji for creating the awareness.

Height of Madness this is . How can one pay such huge amount without any authenticity of person calling as Customs Officer? This is why people at large are advised not to accept friend's request on face book from strangers, unknown people. At times, people post wrong photographs to impress soft targets like this lady & cheat women specially.
In a time when it's time to say " There is nothing called a free lunch or dinner ". So how can you trust a totally strange person who is doing all " Sweet Nothings " !!
It is sad that you just loose such a huge sum for a foolish act of yours.

Some people are desperate for friends. And accept 'friend requests' from totally unknown people, who could be professional fraudsters.

Generally the husband is busy working like a donkey somewhere, and the wife, terribly bored living as a queen, is desperate to chat with someone. Anyone.

Why then waste the time of police by registering a case?
