Mangaluru receives award for best solid waste management in 'Swachh Survekshan'

Mangaluru, Jun 23: Mangaluru had recently bagged the title of ‘India’s Best Medium City (3-10 lac population) in Solid Waste Management’ in Swachh Suruvekshan 2018.

The award distribution ceremony by ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA) was held in Indore on Saturday June 23. Mangaluru was represented by mayor Bhaskar K Moily, MCC commissioner Mohammed Nazeer, health standing committee chairman Naveen R D'Souza and environmental engineer Madhu S Manohar, who received the award from housing and urban affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri.

The Swachh Suruvekshan 2018 assessed 4,203 urban local bodies and was oragnised by the ministry of housing and urban affairs, under the aegis of Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban).

The exercise undertaken between January 4 2018 to March 10 this year enhanced the scope to cover record number of urban local bodies impacting around 40 crore urban citizens across length and breadth of the country by 2,700 assessors.

Cities having population of one lac and more and capital cities were ranked at national level and cities with population of less than one lac were ranked at zonal level – north, east, west, south and north east.

Indore, Bhopal and Chandigarh were the top three cleanest cities at the national level. The cleanest big city (population with over 10 lac) was awarded to Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh. Mysuru was awarded the cleanest medium city (population between 3 to 10 lac) and New Delhi Municipal Council was awarded India’s cleanest small city (population below 3 lac).

Awards were also given in categories such as India’s fastest mover’s city – bagged by Ghaziabad (big city) and Bhiwandi (medium city); India’s Best City in Citizens' Feedback – bagged by Kota (big city) and Parbhani (medium city); India’s best city in innovation and best practices – bagged by Nagpur (big city) and Aligarh (medium city). Navi Mumbai of Maharashtra won the India’s best city in solid waste management with a population over 10 lac.

During Swachh Suruvekshan 2018, a record number of 37.66 lac citizen feedbacks were collected and 53.58 lac Swachhata Apps downloaded. The total interactions on Swachhata App by citizens were around 1.18 crore.

    First pay the salaries of the workers of the Antony Waste Management company. The award should really go to this company who collect the waste everyday morning and sort it out. These employees should get the award and not the MCC officials.

    I heard that these workers live in a pathetic condition in the camp assigned to them with stench all around. Any organisation if treats its workers properly will surely get the respect of the people - awards are secondary .I have seen lot of improvement in waste collection in Mangalore .Even households try to segregate the dry and wet waste and keep it separately in bins particularly in apartments. The old stinking concrete bins have become history. But lot needs to be done at Central vegetable market where you can see the vendors dumping their waste everywhere

    Haha! Solid waste "management" in Mangalore. What a joke!
    Probably they didn't visit Vamanjoor. If Mangalore is the "best", I can only imagine how worse the other places are.

    Waste management is an integral part of any city which has a direct impact on the economy and well being of the city. Mangalore has been rated as one of the cleanest cities in the world. We are very proud of this!!. I believe the credit should also go to every citizen who is living in this beautiful city who is equally responsible to keep their surroundings and city clean. However, it doesn't end there. Mangalore is growing in a very fast pace and due to the urbanization, there is a good volume of people migrating from villages and different cities which is making the city more populated plus the climate change is making things worse. Maintaining traffic and cities infrastructure is also one of the biggest challenges Mangalore should focus on. The stakeholders need to focus on all the primary areas like water, transportation, infrastructure, public security, well being etc. We as responsible citizens we should continue doing what we are doing as we have a moral responsibility to address.

    Sustainability is not just a goal ...its a way of life!

    Solid Waste Management is equally important for a fast growing city such as Mangalore. So many new ideas blossom as a result of new research and development. One good thing leads to another, and that's how our environment will be protected with more sanitation, more cleanliness and more orderliness that a fast growing City such as Mangalore badly deserves.

    India is a fast growing country with population growing without any control. India has room for so much of progress that will benefit the people and their future welfare. Whatever Technology that we introduce in Mangalore and prove it to be useful, we can always sell that technology to other States and create a revenue that is good for our city.

    Solid Waste Management is an useful thought for Mangalore and India.
