Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur (MS)

Puttur, Jun 23: A car was severely damaged and seven people sustained injuries after a wild elephant struck the vehicle with its trunk.

One of the injured is said to be in a critical condition. The incident occurred at Bilinele on the Uppinangady - Subramanya state highway near here early morning on Saturday, June 23.

The Maruti Omni car was plying from Dharmasthala to Subramanya. When the car approached CPCRI at Bilinele, the driver of the car spotted the wild elephant crossing the road. He stopped the car near the elephant.

The elephant which grew agitated by the car stopping near it attacked the car with its trunk.

Fortunately for the people in the Omni, a bus came along and began blaring the horn non-stop, which scared the elephant away. The tusker left the car and ran into the forest. Locals said that the arrival of the bus in the nick of the time averted what could have been a major tragedy.

I recently saw a program which gives options in a situation demanding quick & appropriate action in nick of time to save yourself on TV.
It had the same scenario of a bigger van getting attacked by an elephant & options were-
    1. Get down from the car & runaway
    2. Stay put in the van
    3. Blare the horn loudly & non stop
    4. Get down & hide behind the van
They give detailed reasons for the above actions & why except one all others are dangerous. According to their version staying inside the van & blaring the horn continuously will distract the elephant & it would runaway with loud horn irritating or frightening it. The same was proved right in this incident, keeping a safe distance from wild animals was the best option too.

Now even coastal districts of Karnataka are witnessing elephant attacks on highways which was very rare few decades ago. Loss of forests due to plantations on forest land, tree cutting for timber, mushrooming of resorts are reasons. Elephants are entering towns in search of food and water.
