Mangaluru, Jun 16: "The most terrible poverty is loneliness and the feeling of being unloved”, Keeping this in mind, Dr Geetha R Shetty, the president of International Women’s Rights, Karnataka wing dreamed of doing something to deal with increasing concerns over women's safety. She decided to construct a home for women, who are abandoned by their families called ‘Sevashrama’.

Sevashrama, located at Belma Barke, near Deralakatte, Dakshina Kannada is a home for destitute women.

It was started in May 2013, with a motive of providing home for the homeless destitute women. It started with serving only two destitute women but over the years, many women came to seek asylum here.

Sevashrama aims at providing the love and care that the inmates needed when they grow old with all the facilities provided to them by the Ashrama that is required to lead a comfortable life.

The Ashram intends towards identifying and bringing the needy on board to help them lead a respectable life to the best possible extent. The institution runs under the vision to build a peaceful, spontaneous and content living environment to the one in need. It aims at creating a permanent, self-sustained and growing environment for the destitute with no expectations of returns in whatsoever manner.

Sevashrama can accommodate around 60 inmates and is run by Seva Bhaava Charitable Trust, a self-funded trust.

The Ashrama currently accommodates about 26 inmates. The inmates residing with them are all above the age of 60. They are provided with all basic requirements such as food, shelter, clothing, health care, nutrition and education for free of cost.
