Beltangady, Jun 15: The Charmadi Ghat section of the highway that is prominently being used by people travelling from Mangaluru to Bengaluru and vice versa, was reopened for traffic with effect from Friday June 15 for public transport vehicles.

However, the road use has been limited for public transport vehicles and light vehicles. Vehicles other than public transport and light vehicles including heavy vehicles have no permission to ply on this road at present. The deputy commissioner stated in his order that light vehicles are permitted to use this road with effect from Thursday evening, while public transport vehicles can ply on this road with effect from Friday morning.

Large amount of sticky mud deposited on the road was cleared with the help of 12 JCBs till Thursday evening. Trees and rocks which were posing danger to road users have been removed. Temporary drains have been dug to allow excess water to drain out.

Huge craters have been formed all through the ghat section road because of the fact that water was standing on this road for long. They pose high level of danger to light vehicles including two-wheelers.

Officials of different departments including national highways authority of India inspected the progress in work on Thursday evening. Considering the progress made, and also because rainfall had subsided since Thursday afternoon, they opined that the road could be opened for vehicular traffic considering the problems faced by the public. Former MLA, Vasanth Bangera, was among those who visited the area.
