Updates on Kumaraswamy ministry expansion



10.54 pm: MLA Eshwar Khandre who was also in the meeting dismisses reports of discontent. "It was not a meeting of disrgruntled MLAs, but of friends."

10.45 pm: After meeting of disgruntled Congress MLAs at Shangri La hotel, MLA B C Patil told reporters, "We came here to have dinner as we are not busy like the new ministers. We will not approach the high command for ministerial berths. We will discuss with the people of our respective constituencies before taking any decision."

8.45 pm: CM Kumaraswamy to hold series of meetings on June 7.

8.30 pm: Discontent Congress MLAs who were left out of the ministry meet at Shangri La hotel. Sathish Jarkiholi, N A Haris Dr Sudhakar, B C Patil and others in attendance

5.45 pm: Supporters of MLA Dr Sudhakar warn of Chikkaballapur bandh if he is not given cabinet berth by June 7 evening.

5.32 pm: "There is absolutely no confusion about the cabinet formation, and especially no confusion about the energy portfolio. All 80 of our MLAs are eligible to become ministers but we have only 22 berths": Parameshwara

5.28 pm: Deputy CM Dr Parameshwara speaks. "It is the media who was criticising us for not expanding the ministry sooner. We have given assurance to the people to give good governance as coalition. After the CM and I took oath, we held several meetings with officials to understand the problems of the people, be it the floods in Dakshina Kannada or the potholes in Bengaluru roads. Even though ministry expansion got delayed, we have ensured that there was no delay in governance and we have taken all measures expected of the government."

5.26 pm: "It is natural for supporters of some MLAs to feel disasappointed when they are not given ministerial positions. It happened in 2008 when BJP formed the government too": Kumaraswamy

5.24 pm: "As many as 25 ministers have been inducted today, some are new faces and some are experienced. We have chosen them so as to give the best administration to the people": Kumaraswamy

4.09 pm: "Even till the last moment I thought I would be given portfolio. I don't know why they did not. I will not lobby for any position," says M B Patil.

4.06 pm: Several Congress members of Tikota gram panchayat of Vijaypura quit in protest against the party high command for not giving ministerial berth to M B Patil.

4.02 pm: Jayamala says she is ready to accept any portfolio given to her. "I thank Congress president Rahul Gandhi and deputy CM Dr Parameshwara for giving me minsterial position," she says.

3.20 pm: Dr Jayamala Ramachandra sworn-in as minister. Ex-actress Jayamala is an MLC of the Congress.

3.17 pm: R Shankar sworn-in as minister. He is the only MLA from the Karnataka Pragnyavantha Janatha Party (KPJP).

3.15 pm: Puttarangashetty of Congress sworn-in. He is the MLA of Chamarajanagar.

3.12 pm: Rajashekar Patil of Congress takes oath.

3.09 pm: Venkataramanappa sworn-in as minister. He is the Congress MLA from Pavagada.

3.07 pm: Shivanand Patil of Congress takes oath as minister. He is the MLA of Basavana Bagevadi.

3.04 pm: N Mahesh from BSP takes oath. He will be the sole BSP man in the Karnataka ministry and is the first minister of BSP outside Uttar Pradesh. The JD(S) had tied up with Mayawati's BSP before the elections.

3.02 pm: Zameer Ahmed Khan takes oath in English. Interestingly, Zameer was in the JD(S) earlier and crossed over to Congress just over a month before the elections.

3 pm: Sa Ra Mahesh of JD(S) takes oath next.

2.58 pm: Mangaluru (Ullal) MLA U T Khader invited to take oath as crowd erupts in cheers. Khader is the sole Congress candidate who won in the twin districts of Dakshina Kannad and Udupi. Under the previous Congress government, he held the portfolios of health first and then food and civil supplies.

2.55 pm: JD(S) leader C S Puttaraju invited to take oath amid loud cheering from crowd.

2.53 pm: Priyank Kharge sworn-in as minister. He is the son of Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge and was the minster of IT and BT in the previous Congress government

2.51 pm: Venkatrao Nadagouda of JD(S) sworn-in. He is the MLA of Sidhanur.

2.49 pm: Ramesh Jarkiholi invited to take oath amid cheers from crowd. He was minister of small scale industries in the previous Congress government.

2.46 pm: S R Srinivas of JD(S) sworn-in as minister. He is the MLA of Gubbi constituency in Tumakuru.

2.44 pm: N H Shivashankara Reddy of Congress takes oath. He is MLA of Gauribidanur.

2.40 pm: M C Managuli, JD(S) MLA from Sindagi takes oath. The 83-year-old veteran registered a win 24 years after his first win in his constituency this elections.

2.37 pm: Krishna Byregowda invited to take oath as minister. He was formerly agricultural minister in the erstwhile Congress government.

2.35 pm: D C Thammanna of JD(S) takes oath. He is the MLA of Maddur constituency in Mandya.

2.32 pm: K J George takes oath next. He was Bengaluru urban development minister in the previous Congress government.

2.30 pm: G T Devegowda of JD(S) takes oath as minister. Devegowda is the one who defeated former chief minister Siddaramaiah in Chamundeshwari constituency.

2.27 pm: Congress leader D K Shivakumar on stage to be sworn-in as minister. Loud cheering from crowd for the Congress trouble-shooter. In the previous Congress government, Shivakumar served as energy minister, a portfolio that is now in the JD(S) kitty.

2.24 pm: Bandeppa Kashampur of JD(S) takes oath as minister.

2.21 pm: R V Deshpande of Congress invited to take oath as minister next.

2.19 pm: H D Revanna of JD(S) first to be sworn-in as minister. Governor administers the oath.

2.17 pm: Governor Vajubhai Vala arrives. Chief minister Kumaraswamy and deputy CM Dr Parameshwara join him on stage. Ceremony begins with National Anthem.

2.08 pm: Chief minister H D Kumaraswamy arrives at Raj Bhavan.

2.03 pm: Independent MLA H Nagesh expresses disappointment over not getting portfolios. "Shankar who was in BJP before is getting portfolio, but not me," he says.

1.53 pm: Congress and JD(S) MLAs gather Raj Bhavan for swearing-in

1.48 pm: Sources say that U T Khader who was slated to get the health ministry may be given housing portfolio while K J George may get large industries

1.45 pm: After days of tug-of-war for portfolios, the Kumaraswamy-led JD(S)-Congress coalition government is finally set for expansion. The Congress will have 22 portfolios and the JD(S), BSP and an independent will get the rest. For now, the Congress has decided to swear-in 15 of the 22 ministers. The JD(S) has got some of the prime portfolios like finance and energy, while home affairs, revenue, medical education and others have been retained by the Congress.

Ahead of the swearing-in, supporters of some of the Congress and JD(S) MLAs descended on the streets protesting over denial of portfolios to their leaders. One of the protestors even threatened to commit suicide, say reports.
