1.28 pm: JD(U) leader KC Tyagi says the exorbitant fuel rates could have led to the BJP drubbing in the latest round of by elections. "There is outrage across the country due to increase in price of petrol and diesel. Constant rise in the price of fuel is also a reason for such poll results. 1.17 pm: Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) wins Gomia Assembly bypoll with party candidate Babita Devi defeating BJP rival Maghavlal Singh by a thin margin of 1,344 votes. The JMM also won the Silli Assembly bypoll in state.

12.32 pm: Kairana, Uttar Pradesh: BJP has lost this big prestige battle to Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal. The RLD was the face of a united opposition in Uttar Pradesh. The SP had openly supported the RLD candidate Tabassum Hasan in the campaign to the bypoll. Hasan also claimed that she had the support of Bahujan Samaj party, though party boss Mayawati made no formal announcement of this.
This is the third straight Lok Sabha loss for the BJP in UP, after Gorakhpur and Phulpur, held respectively by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.

11.52 am : Palghar (Maharastra), Lok Sabha : The BJP is leading by over 18,000 votes over the Shiv Sena in the counting for Palghar Lok Sabha seat bypoll in Maharashtra. After the 11th round of counting, the BJP's Rajendra Gavit got 1,24,166 votes, while the Shiv Sena's Shrinivas Wanaga polled 1,05,677. The Bahujan Vikas Aghadi candidate, Baliram Jadhav, is at the third place with 86,523 votes.

11.48 am: CONGRESS RETAINS AMPATI : Congress candidate Miani D Shira has won the Ampati Assembly by election in Meghalaya by around 3,100 votes, beating nearest rival of the National People's Party (NPP) CG Momin. The seat fell vacant after Shira's father and Congress leader Mukul Sangma, who won from two seats in the Assembly elections, vacated the seat.

11.25 : Shiv Sena Charges at EC : Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut has alleged foul play in the Palghar and Bhandara-Gondiya Lok Sabha by-elections, where his party is trailing. “The Election Commission is acting like a mistress. There was foul play in Palghar and Bhandara-Gondiya. We will seek re-election in few booths after talking to the Congress and NCP. The BJP deliberately stopped people from voting. How can voting percentage jump up by 8% overnight in Palghar?” he said. Shiv Sena will meet party chief Uddhav Thackeray at his Matoshree residence later today.

The Kairana seat fell vacant after the death of BJP MP Hukum Singh, whose daughter Mriganka Singh is now the party candidate.
She is fighting Rashtriya Lok Dal's Tabassum Hasan, who is also supported by the Congress, the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party. Just ahead of the polls, Lok Dal candidate Kanwar Hasan retired from the contest and joined RLD, further boosting her chances. The opposition hopes that by consolidating the anti-BJP vote it will repeat its success in Gorakhpur and Phulpur bye-elections earlier this year when the ruling party suffered humiliating defeats. The Kairana election is the fourth Lok Sabha by-election in the state since 2014. Apart from Gorakhpur and Phulpur, a by-election was also held in Mainpuri in 2014.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Rattan Singh Kakkar Kalan appeared to be out of the contest as he was way behind the Congress and Akali Dal candidates. Laddi was leading by 10,586 votes over his rival Kohar after five rounds of counting were completed. The Shahkot bypoll was necessitated after the demise of Akali Dal MLA Ajit Singh Kohar in February this year.

BJP's Madhav Lal Singh is currently in second place with 8,670 votes. AJSU's Lambo dar Mahto is a close third with 7,800 votes. The bypoll was following the conviction of MLA Yogendra Mahto of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).
10.02 am : Shahkot Assembly (Punjab) : Congress’ Hardev Singh Laddi Sherowalia is leading by around 8,500 votes from Akali-BJP candidate Naib Singh Kohar after 4th round of counting. The Shahkot bypoll was necessitated after the demise of Akali Dal MLA Ajit Singh Kohar in February this year. Over 76 per cent of 1.72 lakh voters had exercised their franchise on May 28 for the seat where the Congress, SAD and AAP were locked in a triangular battle.
The Shahkot assembly constituency, considered an Akali bastion, had recorded 78.60 per cent polling during 2017 Assembly polls. For ruling party Congress, the bypoll was being seen as the barometer for the popularity of the 14-month-old Amarinder Singh led state government. Congress is confident of maintaining the winning momentum by wresting seat from Akalis. However, opposition Akali Dal is striving to retain its pocket borough from where late Kohar was elected five-times.
The SAD had accused the ruling party of misusing official machinery against political opponents. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which faced a humiliating defeat in the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha bypoll and civic polls, is desperately looking for the victory. Ruling Congress had fielded Hardev Singh Laddi while Akali Dal had given ticket to Ajit Singh Kohar's son Naib Singh Kohar. The AAP had nominated Rattan Singh Kakkar Kalan for the bypoll. 10.01 am : Tharali Assembly (Uttarkand) : BJP leader Munni Devi Shah is leading by around 300 votes over Congress rival Jeet Ram. The Tharali Assembly is reserved for Scheduled Caste and falls in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district. It recorded over 53 percent polling on May 28. The contest is straight on the seat between traditional rivals the BJP and the Congress with the former looking to retain it and the latter trying to stage a comeback. Maganlal Shah of the BJP, whose death earlier this year necessitated the bypolls, had won in 2017 defeating his nearest rival Jeetram. Others in the fray are Kunwar Ram CPI(M), Kasbilal Shah (UKD) and Beeri Ram (Independent).

BJP candidate Mriganka Singh has lost the early leads in Kairana Lok Sabha bypolls to the joint RLD-SP candidate Tabassum Hassan and is also trailing in the Noopur Assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh.
The saffron party continues to lead in the two Lok Sabha seats of Palghar and Bhandara-Gondiya in Maharashtra. Lalu Prasad Yadav’s RJD is leading in Bihar’s Jokihat Assembly seat and the CPM has taken early leads in Kerala’s Chengannur Assembly seat.
Counting to 14 Lok Sabha and Assembly by-elections is underway with the results being seen as the first big test of opposition unity ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
The Lok Sabha seats where bypolls were held include Kairana in Uttar Pradesh, Palghar and Bhandara-Gondiya in Maharashtra and the lone Nagaland seat. The Assembly constituencies awaiting results are Noorpur (Uttar Pradesh), Shahkot (Punjab), Jokihat (Bihar), Gomia and Silli (Jharkhand), Chengannur (Kerala), Palus Kadegaon (Maharashtra), Ampati (Meghalaya), Tharali (Uttarakhand) and Maheshtala (West Bengal).
