EVM glitches mar Maha LS bypolls in Bhandara-Gondiya, voting cancelled at 35 polling stations

Mumbai, May 28 (IANS): With serious malfunctioning in the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) electronic voting machines (EVMs), polling was cancelled in at least 35 polling stations in the Bhandara-Gondiya Lok Sabha bye-elections on Monday.

Election Commission (EC) officer in Bhandara-Gondiya, Anant Walaskar told reporters that EVM-VVPAT malfunctioning complaints were received from 64 polling stations in five hours since polling began for Palghar and Bhandara-Gondiya constituencies at 7 a.m.

The EC has repaired some EVM-VVPATs or deployed spare machines in many areas, but in at least 35 polling stations, voting would be held at a later date, Walaskar added.

The officer denied rumours that elections in the entire constituency were cancelled, saying polling continued normally in all the other areas.

The EVM-VVPATs malfunctioned in polling booths at Khapa, Mandhal, Hingna and Kharbi in Bhandara-Gondiya, besides Tarapur, Shelvali, Kamare, Satpati, Maikhop, Dhuktan, Chinchan and other polling stations in Palghar.

Work on replacing the VVPAT-EVMs was underway as hundreds of voters patiently waited to cast their votes in the blistering heat.

According to current estimates, complaints of faulty or malfunctioning EVM-VVPATs were received from a total of 140 polling stations in both the constituencies.

Taking strong objections, Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh (BBM) President Prakash Ambedkar demanded cancellation of the elections in Bhandara-Gondiya.

"I have received reports of problems in some 450 polling stations. Its clear that the EVM-VVPATs have been tampered as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is losing the elections. The entire elections must be cancelled and held afresh," said Ambedkar, the grandson of Dalit leader B.R. Ambedkar.

Since polling started, both the constituencies recorded brisk polling with more than an average 15 per cent of the electorate exercising their franchise, but the tempo is likely to subside as people may remain indoors in the afternoon due to high temperatures.

Tight security has been deployed in both the Lok Sabha constituencies to prevent any untoward incidents.

From the late 1990s until 2007, voting machines were used extensively in elections. Most areas in the Netherlands used electronic voting in polling places. On 5 October 2006 the group “Wij vertrouwenstemcomputers niet” (We do not trust voting machines) demonstrated on Dutch television how the Nedap ES3B machines could be manipulated in five minutes. After security problems with the machines were widely publicised, the Netherlands decided to ban in 2007.

Germany ended electronic voting in 2009, with the German Federal Constitutional Court finding that the inability to have meaningful public scrutiny meant that the electronic voting was unconstitutional.
Unlike India they were not threatened with prosecution. Unlike India, their TV channels refused to crawl before the establishment and provided platform to the group challenging the reliability of voting machines.
EVM count mismatch Salami Fraud in electoral system?
‘Salami Fraud’ is a term used to explain numerous large scale and organised bank robbery through insidious hidden software that takes away tiny small pennies from millions of accounts to siphon off huge amount of money.
In Gujarat, there were over 16 seats, where the victory margins were less than 3,000 votes. A vote transfer of even half a percent in a constituency of two lakh voters could result in a victory of a candidate who was originally trailing by 2000 votes. Such minimalistic vote transfer could go undetected because the winner could always use power to block any efforts for rigorous verifications. In Tripura EVM Malfunctions. In karnataka EVM and VVPAT count mismatch.

    1. What no one knows but they must know is whether the EC verified even those 5% machines in closed room after the results were declared?
    2. Another important question that the EC must answer is if a digital transaction in a machine can ever be different from the receipt?
So many malfunctioning EVMs point to some sort of systematic anarchy! Election theft through EVMs is fraud.

All opposition parties should file a joint petition in SC DEMANDING BAN OF EVMS in next general elections. Any electronic machine can be tampered with and evms should not be exception. Why voters time should be wasted on faulty machine. Shame on EC THAT even in handfull of byelections EVMS are not functioning properly.

Now we understand the reason for the results in DK and Udupi districts. Thankfully God saved UT Khader. We feel very bad for Pramod Madhwaraj who was/is the most deserving candidate to be MLA in coastal Karnataka. We must revert to the ballot paper.

I am going to file a case on SC on election commission, how every time EVM's have glitches ? is EC is not functioning properly on Tax payers money ? this is the right time we all must unite and take Election Commissioner ! file a case on him and EC. We should not allow 2019 vote casting on EVM's.

With every election since the last general election repeated complaints have been received against the EVM's machines and the Election Commission of India has virtually turned a blind eye on this critical issue.

High time the EVM's are BANNED and Ballot Papers are reintroduced as has been done with the Greatest Democracy in the world.
