Bengaluru: MLC election - Internal turmoil in BJP over Yeddyurappa's 'autocratic' style

Bengaluru, May 28: Eleven MLC seats in the legislative council of the state will be falling vacant shortly. BJP can nominate five members. Notification about the election has been issued and June 19 happens to be the last date for nominations.

BJP's state core committee is to meet on May 29. It was proposed to hold detailed discussions and arrive at a consensus on the names of people to be nominated to the council on that day. But state president of BJP, B S Yeddyurappa, as he has done in the past, reportedly has prepared his own list of nominations and taken the list to New Delhi without holding discussions or consultations in any of the party forums. This has given rise to heartburn and disgruntlement within the party.

Many leaders have been expressing anger at the continuance of autocratic style of functioning by Yeddyurappa, although he had earlier been counselled and asked to mend his ways and take everyone into confidence after he unilaterally appointed district presidents of the party. Many leaders now feel sidelined. They say that the list of nominations should have been prepared duly giving weightage for the level of sincerity to the party, work done for election, regional considerations etc. They say that one-sided list by a single person on behalf of the entire party unit is anti democratic.

BJP could not bag power in spite of emerging as the biggest party in the recent assembly election. This is the time when the party needs to strengthen its unity and forge ahead with concerted effort. The leaders, who are concentrating on Lok Sabha election now, are afraid that Yeddyurappa's style might hamper chances of the party in next year's Lok Sabha election and earn the wrath of leaders who have been neglected.
