Tumakuru: Under-trial jumps to death from court building

Tumakuru, May 27: An under-trial prisoner who had been brought to the court for hearing jumped from the third floor of the building and ended his life. The incident happened on Saturday May 26.

The under-trial, identified as Chandrayya (29) from Adalagere in Gubbi taluk, had been accused of attacking a relative with a sickle in the year 2017. He was later arrested by the personnel of Cheloor police station and booked under section 307 of Indian Penal Code. He had been accommodated in the district prison at Oorukere here.

Chandrayya had been brought to the court on Saturday. When he was being escorted to the court hall, he escaped from the police and jumped from the third floor. Although he was immediately admitted into the district hospital here and treated, his life could not be saved. It is said that when in prison too, Chandrayya behaved like a mentally unstable person.

District superintendent of police, Divya Gopinath, and other senior officials visited the spot and guided further steps.
