Watch: Sikh cop saves Muslim youth from violent mob, hailed as hero on social media

Dehradun, May 25 (Zee News): Gagandeep Singh, a Sikh policeman who had saved the life of a Muslim youth from a violent mob after the latter was allegedly found in a compromising position with a Hindu girl at a temple near Ramnagar, has won praise on social media.

Sub-Inspector Gagandeep Singh is now being hailed as a hero after a video purportedly showing him saving a Muslim youth from a violent mob went viral on the social media platforms.

According to ADG (law and order) Ashok Kumar, the incident occurred on Tuesday when a Muslim youth went to meet his Hindu girlfriend at the popular Garjia Devi temple, which is about 15 km from Ramnagar.

Locals somehow came to know about it and reached the temple to "teach the duo a lesson".

Sub-Inspector Gagandeep Singh, who was informed about a possible trouble in the area, immediately rushed to the spot where he found a mob preparing to attack the couple alleging that they had been found in a compromising position.

Singh, without fearing the violent mob, immediately rushed to their rescue drawing the Muslim youth close to him to act as a shield to him, and in the process taking several blows from the mob on himself.

"The mob was soon dispersed and the couple was taken to a police station from where they were sent back to their families," the ADG informed.

The entire incident was caught on camera and it was widely shared on the social media where people hailed the Sikh cop for his heroic act.

Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand Police have booked at least five people whose faces are visible in the clip and initiated a massive search to nab them.

A reward of Rs 2,500 has also been announced for Gagandeep Singh for his act of bravery, the ADG said.

Hope Hindutva forces will allow this brave cope to live peacefully in his rest of life since we see in the cases of journalists and social activists have been threatened and killed for reporting and writing against Modi administration. As a result few prominant well established national tv channels are engage in communal debate on daily basis ever since 2014. There is no space for freedom of press now. TV channels Editors and journalists, columnists are forced to resign. Its time now for the people of the nation to change regime in order to recall democracy.

Perhaps 'Sikh cop' is wrong title for this editorial. When it comes discharge of duty in government service religion has no bar. I appreciate Mr. Gagandeep Singh for his honesty to his service and exemplary bravery controlling the crowd from saving one more Indian citizens life from lynching.

It is strange that a country plagued with mobs taking the law into their own hands does not have a law against the crime. The Indian Penal Code (IPC) has no mention of the word ‘lynching’, and any such case is covered under Section 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (causing voluntary hurt) 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapons) and 149 (unlawful assembly).

Furthermore, Section 223 (a) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), 1973, says, “persons accused of the same offence committed in the course same transaction can be tried together.” But, this still doesn’t clarify how the perpetrators will be tried and the retribution thereof.

But as the government has failed to secure its people, the people themselves have begun to campaign for a new law Manav Suraksha Kanoon (Masuka). The law, which literally translates to ‘Protection of human beings’, is not to safeguard humans from natural disasters, a viral disease, or war, but from humans themselves.

The main objectives of Masuka are:

To first define the act of lynching
To legally define an angry mob
Make lynching and mob violence non-bailable offences
    Compensation and rehabilitation of victims
    Time bound judicial enquiry
Holding local police and administration liable for violations of law and order
    Speedy trials
An overwhelming 97%of these attacks took place after PM Modi government came to power in May 2014. About 86% of those killed were Muslims. In 21% of the cases, the police filed cases against the victims/survivors. Cow-related lynchings rose sharply in 2017, with 20 attacks in the first six months. This marks a 75% increase over 2016,which had been the worst year for mob lynchings since 2010.

This act of Policeman Gagandeep Singh shows how he values his job as a policeman even though there was a hostile mob and he took blow on himself to defend another human being. He should be promoted as a Inspector as we need such men of courage who can face crowds. We have seen police silently watching lynchings, beatings, murders, violence and looking the other way. We pray more of such men of valour join the police force all over the world where they can protect citizens of the country. A big salute to all brave policemen.
