Gujarat: VHP working president calls Archbishop’s letter a tactic to divide communally

Vadodara, May 22 (NIE): VHP working President Alok Kumar on Tuesday condemned a letter from Delhi Catholic Archbishop Anil Couto, dated May 8, addressed to all churches in the capital to “pray ahead of 2019 polls”, referring to the current political atmosphere in the country “turbulent”. Kumar who was in Vadodara on Tuesday for an interaction called it a strategy to garner Christian votes. Kumar said, “We believe that usage of religious language with words like ‘fast’ and ‘prayers’, puts undue pressure on people following the religion to follow what is being preached. VHP condemns such tactics to create vote banks.” In his letter, the Archbishop asks for a prayer campaign and a day of fasting every week ahead of the general elections.

“It is our hallowed practice to pray for our country and its political leaders all the time but all the more so when we approach the general elections. As we look forward towards 2019 when we will have a new government, let us begin a prayer campaign from May 13,” the Archbishop had said in the letter.

The letter which also read that the democratic and secular framework of the country is under threat was called as a direct interference to manipulate voters and create community-based vote banks, by Kumar. “Facilitating such vote banks based on religious sentiments is in itself a threat to democracy and if other communities will play such tactics, Hindus won’t be left behind either,” said Kumar. He further warned that one must also keep the proportion of voters from every community in mind before taking such a step.

Kumar also questioned the authority of the archbishop to issue such a letter, “Does the letter have approval from the Vatican or is the Vatican aware of the issuance of such a letter?” he asked.

Speaking on the Ram Mandir, Kumar showed optimism about their expectations from the Supreme Court verdict slated in a few months. “Justice will be served, our case is strong and we will win. A magnificent Ram Mandir will be built in Ayodhya,” Kumar said.

Ahead of 2019 elections, Kumar refused to comment on the promise of ‘acche din’ by the BJP government but said, “VHP workers are asked to work for the nation and we will extend our support to anyone who works for the nation and for Hindus.”

He also warned over the release of ‘Loveratri’, an upcoming drama by Salman Khan’s production house, in Gujarat.

Its the truth & reality, in 2014 all Christians with one mind supported BJP into power, rejecting all other parties, in anticipation of a clean and better India for all. As a result BJP came into power with 2/3 majority.

Majority of the states too given to BJP. But after 2014 instead of seeing the wind of development, people started experiencing fear, anxiety, atrocities on the pretext of conversion, Ghar Vapsi, what to eat, what to wear, whom to marry etc etc, Its a strong trust that PM of our Nation and his machinery will analyse and understand the concerns and fear factors expressed and work to eliminate those fear factors, rather fuelling them more.

Christians have a history of 2000 years in India but have remained only 2 to 2.5% till this day, clearly rubbishes the conversion blame by some vested interests, who never wanted or want the upliftment of the downtrodden and poor masses of the country.

Therefore , there are over 65% Hindu and other brothers and sisters of India too are also standing & supporting this small 2.5% in gratitude of their value filled education and upliftment of societies.

The Letter of Delhi Archbishop Anil Couto is in place and timely. He as a shepherd has the moral and spiritual right to raise the feelings and flavor of the sheepfold. We should not be narrow minded and conservative to accept and appreciate the good gesture has been implemented and fostered. We should be proud of ourselves to pray for the wellbeing and wellness of Mother Country India and its smooth functioning of any elected government which respects and complements the fundamental rights of every citizen of India without bias and bigotry

The nation holds in "high esteem" the values of the constitution: JUSTICE, social, economic and political; LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship; EQUALITY of status and of opportunity; and to promote among them all, FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation. These values and valour of the Nations is to be protected, promoted and propagated without fear and folly.

The scenes and the scenarios which take place in and around us, give an impression that all people are not safe and sound but there is fear and tears running down in the life of most of the citizens of India. This fear is to be eliminated and tears should be wiped away. This is possible only in and through the intervention of God almighty who is everything to everyone. For God everything is possible.

Praying for the Nation and its activities is not politics but politeness and patriotism to fill courage in the weak mind of the citizens and encourage the downtrodden of the society to seek solace and a place in the law of the land that is Our Constitution is a rich heritage and hereditary .

Dear World Thinker, Archibishop letter has divided their community only. It was his personal view not accepted by other Bishops or endorsed. He felt something, and expressed. So in a wise society, instead of jumping on him, try to understand his stand and clarify or solve his issues. When Yogi Adityanath blamed Late Mother Theresa, why didn't anyone objected on the ground, is there anyone out there who at least dip his or her finger in the water and soaked the throat of a dying person in life?? Instead of criticising, if we analyse and sole the issues, we can build a better India.

In 2014, the BJP tried to take off Christmas from the Indian Calendar, the actress Smriti Irani was the Chief of Operation.

The Supreme Court CJ wanted to have meetings at Good Friday which was opposed by a Judge from Kerala origin.

In Meghalaya with 2 BJP MLAs, they are ruling there, the BJP CM made the order that Good Friday is a regular working day for the civil service, but it was reverted by the protect from the Assembly.

Modi preached too emotionally (based on the news) that the Hindus should vote for BJP.

When the total anti-Christian V.P. Venkiah Naidu was invited as the Chief guest by the handiwork of his subordinate P.J. Kurian to speak at the 101 th birthday celebration of the oldest Marthoma Bishop at Tiruvella, Kerala, ( Bishop got one Padmasree as a catching bait for the BJP), V.P. said that the Christian religious leaders should be concentrated in teaching spiritual matters, not any way influence in politics. The BJP can use Hindu religion as the main spade card, nobody can question that.

How many attacks against the Christians in September 2008 when BJP Yeddyurappa took control of Karnataka? Had they formed a Government in Karnataka, many Churches would have been attacked, also some Mosque.

If the Christians of India are not praying earnestly and work hard to have a democratic Government at New Delhi, GOD can't be blamed for the delinquency and laziness of the minority Christians in India; they are the number one target of the BJP for persecution as a typical example for the other minorities of India to be submissive to the autocratic-theocratic rule of India. In 2016 348 attacks and in 2017 ---- 736 attacks against the Christians of India. Is that a Christian friendly democratic Government?

Do we need to get permission from VHP, BJP or it associates to pray? If you are doing good for the society, why does this affect you. If the cap suites you, you wear it. Archbishop has written a pastoral letter to parishes of his Archdiocese to pray for good governance. What does it matter to VHP? Don’t try to be the sensor board of the country by telling what to pray, eat or do. VHP is trying to divide the country based on religion. We Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhist, Jains and all religions want to live in peace. Please don’t spoil it.

Clear hypocrisy. Religious hatred will only stop when we remove the caste/religion field in our application forms that we submit when we admit a kid to school. "Gidavagi baggaddu maravagi baggithey?" I have traveled around countries and worked with people. Believe me the hatred that people have here towards other religion, prayers also won't suffice to clear this hatred from people's minds. I personally don't understand how jobless people could be to question someone's rights.
High time people should travel and see the world. Go to the gulf especially, mangalorean hindus and muslims stay under the same roof along with Christians. Why can't we have the same tolerance and brotherhood in India? Bangalore/Mumbai for that matter. No one is really bothered.
As for this post, it is a right of every citizen to pray for peace and good governance in the country. This is patriotism. In school we were taught to sing,"Lord we pray was golden peace, peace all over the world". Is this in any way communal or did it affect votes?Huh....Someone needs treatment asap

We should keep religion and Politics separate(Like in USA). We all know RSS/VHP use religion card to get Majority Hindu Votes. Can they stop using religion and talk about equality and tolerance?
I don't think fasting and prayers will not change the outcome of the election.
India will progress only when we talk and practice religion inside our homes and within the four walls of the Church/Temple and Mosque. All religious leaders should stay away from politics including priests/Bishops/Mullas/Sadhu/Sadhwis/Swamis.
Let us all think about our Country and its people. We all are Indians first. Our caste/religion is secondary. When we start respecting other religions and have mutual respect for each other we all progress. Religious harmony is the essence of the day.

If priests from one religion (Majority) can openly tell their followers to vote for a particular party why your stomach churns if another religious priest tell their followers to be responsible in their voting without ever uttering a single word as to whom they should vote? why you are jumping to conclusion the underlying meaning is a party whom you hate? Being a product of convent school, I can vouch, Christians are the most literate, charitable in India - I mean the education reflects in their action. So, grow up man. When the BJP imposed a ban of beef because of their religious beliefs, we did not object. Now when the Archbishop has asked us to pray and fast for our country, why are they objecting. We too belong to India as much as you all Hindus do. We too are called Indians. All of us are aware of the disturbances going on in our country and there is sense of fear in all. So when the Archbishop has asked for prayers and fasting, he is really bold enough to speak for India because he really loves his country.

Patriotism is not just debating in TV in loud voices, (then going home, having a peg and sleeping in air conditioned rooms) so that your voice is heard and suppress the voice of the opposition. We have to learn patriotism not from our leaders, but from our soldiers, who sacrifice their lives and families for the sake of our India………

Thanks for the media, I didn’t know of this letter, but got it because of highlighting this issue. I too will fast and pray for the upcoming elections of 2019.

A letter for requesting prayers from the community for the well being of the country has never evoked a single negative reaction in the past. It's the prick of conscience which is causing this reaction.
It's also the diversionary tactic. The fuel rates have sky rocketed, banks abound with fraudsters, society is being vitiated in the name of religion, every trick in the book is being utilized to grab power in various states, the appointed Governers have made the Raj Bhavan a party office....to cover up all these, some issue is brought to the forefront.

If they will do GHAR WAPSI that's OK.... if they will speak ill about other religions That's OK, but Christians should not ask to pray for the country or they should not ask to pray for better governance, all media yesterday had only one point to discuss - Archbishop's letter, what wrong ha he written, he is only asking to pray for better government, everybody knows how things are going in this country... so no harm in asking to pray...

Doesn't matter... by the way christian population is only 2.5 % in India, are you really scared of Christians or their prayers which had effect in Karnataka elections, prayers are always strong.... in case if you believe.... even if entire Christians in India will vote for congress - for example, it cannot make any difference technically...

It is not Beetal Bar.... It is Bithul Bar... u know the menu very well there so i believe you have visited there before.... also they serve very good Beef fry.... you can try next time.... no need for your bashan who is safe and not... we were safe in India before and also now, but the current scenario, where hate speeches are going on, actions etc provoke minorities to go to the extreme... if you are so protective about your religion ask your masters not to support the bosses while giving hate speeches... it is because of them that the situation has Arised... whatever they do is fine, but when the archbishop asks to pray it is wrong.... you people will never understand because there is only jealousy, hatred and ego filled in. he was asking to pray for GOOD GOVERNANCE... that means for a good Government, he did not say pray for Modi Govt to fall... we have been following this since ages where we pray for the nation, its government and people...

First of all who chased you from Mangalore to Assam.
Your comments looks like you are trying to threaten one community. Please don't try to do that sitting in Assam. It may be your party culture to threaten minorities. But remember we are all united. So before passing any threatening comments sitting somewhere, think.

    Deva,
Who are you to dictate terms to other religions when you yourself are a big hypocrite?
When we hindu's ask our fellow hindu's to vote for a particular party, its perfectly ok with you?
Please don't hide behind your fake hindutwa ideology and expose your stupidity....
Be open minded....hindustan belongs to every indian....that's all.

    Dev Kumar,

Do not give credit to government (any for that matter) for whatever state of Christians in India is. Because Christians have less children and have stable income to look after their offsprings, the community is what it is. If it wasn't for Church teachings(about family planning), there could have been breeding in dozens - mark my words - certain leaders advise it to their community.

Please note, Christians educate their children by paying full fees but its certain community that has all the reservation yet their children do 'Goothah' mid-way. Communities go Indonesia/Egypt/Pakistan when there is more mouths to feed and illiterate next generation.

He asked for prayers. You guys are making it communal. How many different streams of Hinduism are there? Have you considered?

What is communal thought here. Praying for good government is wrong. Why it has irked only the fringe groups. No where Arch Bishop had said, vote for a particular party.

It is not communal to pray for a good government before election as well as after election.

But for jaundiced eyes everything looks yellow..If developed countries across the world can give us a nice life irrespective of our religion, why then under guidance of religious outfits we are following the path of underdeveloped countries and some of our readers compare ourselves with Pakistan , Indonesia and feel happy that we are better than them...

They should not be our bench mark...some of our readers seem like they only talk about attacks, violence and blood.
