Kasargod, May 19: The special CBI court at Kochi has awarded life term sentences to two persons accused of murdering a man for marrying a Muslim girl, apart from slapping a fine of one lac rupees on each of them.

Balakrishnan (38) from Paduvanadka, Vidyanagar here, who was employed in a courier company, and was also the Congress party's Mandal unit president, had been killed on September 18, 2001, by stabbing him with a knife. After conducting the hearing, the court found that charge of murder levelled against Ikku alias Muhammed Iqbal (44) from Jannathil Firdous, Chattanchal Kunikunnu Padoor Road here, and Jaki Haneef alias Muhammed Haneef (43) from K A Veettil, Talangare, is proved.

The court at the same time, exonerated Abdul Gafoor from Malliga Veettil, Tayalangadi, A M Muhammed from Chengalal Muttattodi Safeena Manzil, and Abubakker from Haji Malag Darbar, Uppala Mannanguli, of involvement with this murder.

On September 18, 2001, Balakrishnan was brought in a car from Nullippadi to Chandragiri river bank at Pilikunje here, before stabbing him to death. CBI said in the charge sheet that Balakrishnan was murdered on account of enmity arising out of his love affair and marriage with the daughter of the fifth accused.

The case was initially handled by the town police and later handed to CBI.
