Congress observes 'Save Democracy Day' in Mumbai

Mumbai, May 19 (IANS): The Maharashtra and Mumbai Congress on Friday organised a 'Save Democracy Day' at the Azad Maidan here to protest against the political developments in neighbouring Karnataka.

State party chief Ashok Chavan and city party President Sanjay Nirupam, besides several legislators and former ministers, took part in the campaign at the Amar Jawan Jyot and pledged to protect democracy.

"The Bharatiya Janata Party has seized control over all democratic institutions. All democratic institutions are subverted and functioning under the pressures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah," Nirupam said on the occasion.

Chavan said the Supreme Court had saved the situation in Karnataka and the "Congress will prove its majority on the floor of the Karanataka Legislature and form the next government there".
