Bengaluru: Youth chases crane - drowns in pond

Bengaluru, May 14: A youth, who was trying to catch hold of an injured crane, drowned in a pond here on Sunday May 13 afternoon. The victim has been identified as Salman (19) from Mangammanapalya in Bandepalya here.

Salman was working as mechanic in Mangammanapalya. At around 1.30 pm on Sunday, he had reached near the Manammanapalya pond along with some friends. He had aimed at a crane and hit it with a rock. The crane, which got injured, reportedly fell into the water. Salman, in spite of the fact that he did not know how to swim, got down into the pond. In an attempt to catch the crane, he went deeper and drowned. Some locals who saw that he did not come back from the pond informed the police. The poilce arrived there along with fire brigade. Although a search was launched for three hours with the help of two boats, Salman could not be traced. Services of Natural Disaster Response Fore were utilized thereafter. The force too searched till 7 pm but failed to find anything.

Bandepalya police have registered a case. It is said that two friends of Salman, who had come with him near the pond, took to their heels immediately after they realized that Salman had drowned.
