Mangaluru, May 13: Some time ago there was an issue of students of Kerala, who are pursuing their studies in Mangaluru having made duplicate voter identity cards. AS a result of this issue, none of the Keralite students voted yesterday in the Karnataka assembly election in Mangaluru constituencies.

Political parties had registered a complaint with the election officer, deputy commissioner and police commissioner of Mangaluru with regards to the duplicate voter id issue of students from Kerala studying in the city. They had accused that the students have their names on both the voter lists of Kerala as well as here in Mangaluru.

Duplicate voter identification cards were created in part number 123 and 136 under Mangaluru south constituency and more than 150 duplicate voter ids were confiscated at that time. The hostels of the respective students were informed about the same and awareness was conducted among the students.

The political parties had even warned the students that if they try to cast a duplicate vote, they will be taken to task in the voting booth itself. The students of Kerala who seem to have understood the seriousness of the issue stayed away from the voting this time around to avoid any hassles.
