Oil prices skyrocket: Petrol rises to 55-month high, diesel costliest ever

Mumbai, Apr 20 (Agencies): Petrol prices rose to 55-month high while diesel became costliest ever. On Friday, petrol increased marginally by 1 paisa and diesel by 4 paise.

Petrol in the national capital, Delhi now costs Rs 74.08 a litre, the highest since September 2013 when rates had hit Rs 76.06. Diesel price at Rs 65.31 is the highest ever.

In Kolkata petrol on Friday retailed at Rs 76.78, in Mumbai at Rs 81.93 and in Chennai at Rs 76.85. Diesel rates in Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai were 68.01, 69.54, 68.9 respectively.

The Oil Ministry had earlier this year sought a reduction in excise duty on petrol and diesel to cushion the impact rising international oil rates but Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his Budget presented on February 1 ignored those calls. India has the highest retail prices of petrol and diesel among South Asian nations as taxes account for half of the pump rates.

The central government had cut excise duty by Rs 2 per litre in October 2017, when petrol price reached Rs 70.88 per litre in Delhi and diesel Rs 59.14. Because of the reduction in excise duty, diesel prices had on October 4, 2017 come down to Rs 56.89 per litre and petrol to Rs 68.38 per litre.

However, a global rally in crude prices pushed domestic fuel prices far higher than those levels.

The October 2017 excise duty cut cost the government Rs 26,000 crore in annual revenue and about Rs 13,000 crore during the remaining part of the
current fiscal year.

The government had between November 2014 and January 2016 raised excise duty on petrol and diesel on nine occasions to take away gains arising from plummeting global oil prices.

This is true that Gujju Prime Minister and BJP President has to support the oil companies as a return favor for all their expenses in the previous election and next election.

In western countries people do not complain the government instead they use small cars which give more mileage for their petrol, use more common transport and car pool, cycles and avoid unnecessary use of cars. In India specially in Mangalore and around villages people do not have time to wait for the bus or use their car to give other people a lift.

All the time we can not blame government we need to blame ourselves plus for electing people on the basis of parties instead of good persons..

BJP supporters still blame MMS without caring his education and knowledge which the present PM and FM has not even 1/100th knowledge of previous PM & FM.

Budget deficit of BJP government led by Finance Minister Jaitley is now recovered through Oil price rise.
Indian banks’ sour loans hit a record 9.5 trillion rupees ($145.56 billion) at the end of June, unpublished data shows, suggesting Asia’s third-largest economy is no nearer to bringing its bad debt problems under control.

Most economies in the World increased GDP and lowered unemployment in 2017. Not India
The farm economy deteriorated and small enterprises were hit badly in the last year.

So increase the burden on common people through price rise is the available option. The oil money in direct which gives nearly one lakh crores indirect taxes is the last resort.

This is the only reason petroleum products is not coming under GST so that price can be exploited as and when.
Now with Karnataka assembly elections in its way Rs 5 crores required for BJP to canvass for each candidate. So increase the price one more time. Who cares water, electricity, roads, cost of living.
It is unfortunate that as opposition BJP has successfully exploited the oil price rise. But in today opposition it is not an subject affecting the normal people's daily expenditure.
Is Congress, JD(S),CPM willing to raise this issue and ask question in the coming assembly elections in Karnataka?

Chethan, tell us honestly how long we the senior citizens have to wait for the Petrolium revolution to take place?
Why Reliance Petrol pumps have to be reopened when we have more than enough Indian oil, HP, BP r there to serve us?
Why the present Central Government has to charge us about 70% Excise duty on Petrolium products? Why I have to pay about RS. 25 per litre as excise duty? Why this Government did not bring Petrolium products under the purview of GST?

It is not only fuel price but all the things are costliest ever including food and medicines. MMS was rediculed as Maun Mohan Singh even though he did everything to keep the prices under control when the price of crude oil was highest in the international market. Show me a single item which has become cheaper under Modi government..As Manmohan Singh said yesterday it is time for Modi to speak up. People cannot continue to suffer.
