Chitradurga: Craze for speed - Student dies during ‘Saddle Sore’ bike challenge

Chitradurga, Apr 20: A 21-year-old engineering student from Kerala was killed in a road accident near here while taking part in a two-wheeler ride challenge named ‘Saddle Sore’.

Midhun, a final year student of a college at Pambady in Kerala, was riding his bike when he met with the accident on the Bengaluru-Pune National Highway at 4 am on Wednesday.

He was killed on the spot after his two-wheeler rammed into a lorry going ahead of him when its driver applied sudden brakes.

Midhun’s family members said that he had a craze for speed bike riding and was participating in the ‘Saddle Sore’ challenge that required riders to cover around 1,500 kilometers in 22 hours.

The challenge is conducted by a US based organisation. Midhun had embarked on this journey on Tuesday evening telling his mother that he was going to Coimbatore for the rally.

    Very sad. Saddle sore challenge has become craze among youth with latest motorbikes. Many blogs about this are written in social media. It is high time such challenges are banned. Indian highways are not suitable for such races.

    This type of endurance racing is not fit for our highways. In any case going on long drives we should make sure we have enough experience in driving, our body is fit, our vehicle is fit and should always avoid driving at night/dawn/dusk. Sadly we throw safety aspects out of the window.
